Viral Meningitis Outbreak: The Virus Can Be Spread For NINE WEEKS After Recovery!

Washoe County Nevada has experienced a viral meningitis outbreak. So far, 47 people have contracted the disease and 43 have had to be hospitalized and the outbreak is still ongoing.

Health officials expect the outbreak to get worse. “The outbreak is still ongoing,” says Washoe County Health District spokesperson Phil Uliabarri said. Uliabarri added that the cases are all still being investigated. Ulibarri says the county is working with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) during its investigation. According to the Washoe County Health District, there are now 47 cases of viral meningitis in the county since July 15, up from the more than 30 cases reported in October 2017.

What makes this challenging is that the virus may be passed on from an infected person for up to two to nine weeks after they feel better and have returned to normal activities,” Ulibarri said. “So even if people do [an] environmental cleaning in certain areas, that area could be contaminated by another individual who was previously ill or who had contact with a sick person.”

And getting the vaccine won’t do you any good. Nevada students enrolled in seventh grade after June 30 were required to be immunized with the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine, commonly referred to as the MCV4. That current vaccine targets only bacterial meningitis and would not work against a viral outbreak such as this one.

Seventy-five percent of the cases were in children ages 0 to 17 years old. Fifty-five percent of them were found in school-age children ranging from 5 to 17 years old.

Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord that is caused by a virus. It is typically less severe than bacterial meningitis, and most people recover on their own within 7-10 days.

If you live in or near Washoe County, you can take steps to prevent contracting the virus. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose and avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. Avoid common playing areas for children such as inflatable bounce houses and slides and avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups, water bottles, sports drinks, or eating utensils with others who may be sick. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, handrails, light switches, desks, keyboards, computer mice, phones, toys, playground equipment, bathrooms, etc., and, always stay home when you are sick.

Symptoms of viral meningitis include a stiff neck, trouble waking from sleep, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sleepiness.

  1. Concerned-Citizen! says:

More filthy foreigners and Muslims come into the US and more and more awful diseases keep spreading like wild fire. KEEP OUT of the U.S. Wake the hell up America.

  2. Meningitis, plague, flu, shankroids. And that Russian disease, rotchercockoff. What next?

  3. The mayor of Reno fought for the Muslims to come to Reno. She asked for 100k of them. A real liberal who will disavow any responsibility in the matter..

  4. Connect the Dots says:

So most of the cases of those sick from the viral form are in children who were forced to be vaccinated against the bacterial form.

  5. Anonymous says:

Rubbing alcohol kills germs. Put some on a cotton ball and wipe down light switches, phones and door knobs. People can prevent disease just by washing their hands but some just don’t get it. Restaurant workers are notorious for not washing their hands. I’ve seen restaurant workers go out of restrooms without washing their hands.

    • Yahooie says:

Poor hygiene is also why I don’t participate in office pot lucks anymore. People have gotten pretty sloppy about handwashing–when they do bother.

Even have hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes for my keyboard, phone, etc., and use both of them often. (Okay not at the present time since I’m “between positions” but sanitizing has gotten to be a regular habit; just do it as the computer boots.)

Wash your hands as soon as you return from a shopping trip. Recyclable grocery bags need a trip through the washing machine fairly often also. Wipe down your steering wheel and other areas within your vehicle that are frequently touched. Sunlight doesn’t touch everywhere within so can’t provide its sanitizing properties in those areas.

There are so many ways to fend off illnesses that really take only a moment or so. Of course, this is in addition to the basics of nutrition and other healthful habits.

  6. Jim in Va. says:

Control the borders and you can control everything else. Right now its chaos.

  7. Heartless says:

I’ve said it before – all persons, animals and plants entering this country need to go through a quarantine and medical vetting. Biggest hazard mankind has ever had to face is not deaths from war; rather, death from disease. Seems by now any fool would know that …. (you hear me Mr./Ms. Gub mint?)

  8. Debbie K says:

This can be a devastating disease and cause long term problems in some cases. It can be brought on by exposure to shingles or chicken pox; I’m not sure about the other herpes, simplex or genital. I got it from exposure to shingles and nothing has ever made me sicker for longer. I was unable to lift my left leg; I had to swing it to walk. They told me I would recover in a few months; I couldn’t walk properly for 2 years. I still have permanent weakness in my left leg, more than 15 years later. Avoid exposure to this and anyone with any type of herpes outbreak, it can be truly awful.

  9. Weaponized immigration is destroying the West.

  10. Brian says:

The symptoms of the meningitis are the same symptoms as a bad hangover. Reno has a lot of people with hangovers who will do dismiss the illness as a hangover. The governments will be reluctant to close the casinos and other businesses that cater to tourists. If this thing is so dangerous, close down and quarantine. The tourist trade can spread it very quickly. Too much money would be lost so they will probably try half-way measures.

  11. Beaumont says:

meninges — membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord
    “itis” — inflammation

    Meningitis is a symptom.

Besides saying that it can be caused by different kinds of germs and parasites, you need to acknowledge the vector.

We are now dealing with third world kinds-of pest infestations and hygiene issues, that noone has seriously discussed, since the days of pioneers.

Please, clean your your room, be clean, and invent the better mousetrap, you smart and resilient people. Civilization is itself a kind of survival skill.
