UK Guardian Observer: Americans stock up to be ready for end of the world

It seems that trend forecaster Gerald Celente was right (again) about the popular trend he has dubbed “neo-survivalism.” There is a lot of uncertainty in America right now, thus it is no surprise that many are reverting back to the rugged individual roots that existed during the founding of our nation.

The UK’s Guardian Observer says Americans stock up to be ready for end of the world:

Pennington is a “prepper”, a growing social movement that has been dubbed Survivalism Lite. Preppers believe that it is better to be safe than sorry and that preparing for disaster – be it a hurricane or the end of civilisation – makes sense.

Unlike the 1990s survivalists, preppers come from all backgrounds and live all over America. They are just as likely to be found in a suburb or downtown loft as a remote ranch in the mountains. Prepping networks, which have sprung up all over the country in the past few years, provide advice on how to prepare food reserves, how to grow crops in your garden, how to hunt and how to defend yourself. There are prepping books, online shops, radio shows, countless blogs, prepping courses and prepping conferences.

There are several reasons for the rise of prepping. The first is that, in the post-9/11 world, mass terror attacks have become a fear for many Americans. At a time when US diplomacy is focused on preventing Iran getting nuclear weapons and terror experts continue to warn of “dirty bombs” on American soil, it is no surprise that many Americans feel threatened. Added to that paranoia has come the recession. Suddenly, millions of Americans have been losing their jobs and their homes, reinforcing a feeling that society is not as stable as it once seemed.

If you’ve ever thought that maybe you’re overreacting about being prepared for disasters or emergencies, be not afraid. Tom Martin, of the American Preppers Network, says “millions of people now have the mindset that they want to be prepared for something, but don’t know what to call it.”

Most preppers and survivalists are not preparing for one single emergency, disaster or scenario. Tess Pennington, of Ready Nutrition, says,”There all kinds of disasters that can happen, natural and man-made.”

More and more everyday Americans are waking up to the idea that far-from-equilibrium situations happen. John Milandred of Pioneer Living points out that a prepper can be anyone, “We get inquiries from people from all walks of life. We had a principal from a school asking us to talk to their children. We have doctors and firemen and lawyers.”

The last ten years clearly demonstrate that large-scale terrorist attacks, natural disasters and economic calamities are not at all out of the realm of possibility. In fact, they seem to be more of a regular occurrence than a one-in-a-million chance. But the prepper mindset doesn’t stop at just stocking food, water, guns and end-of-the-world supplies for what the UK Guardian Observer dubbed the end of civilization. It’s a lifestyle that can involve every aspect of one’s life – from fire drills with the kids to self defense training, emergency medical response and learning how to live more sustainably.

If there is one thing we should have learned from recent domestic disasters like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, it’s that the emergency response of our local, state and federal governments will not be enough to save everyone who is in the thick of it.

We preppers plan for ourselves, family, friends and community, because if we don’t do it, who will?

I must confess, I am  skeptical about the concept of “the end of the world”.  Yes, the american people are armed to the teeth, esp those that are prepping. And an armed citizen is a great threat to the Govt.  A govt which knows we are armed, and wants to chip away at our rights (2nd amendment: US Constitution) to disarm us. Chipping away is less painful to the citizen than say an outright ban on weapons.
my thoughts are wandering, so forgive me if i drift away. The implosion of the stock markets happened before back in fall of 2008.  Sales of guns and ammo went through the roof.
But now, we are looking at the stock markets to fall just below where they did in 2008. This could lead to unemployment (again), on top of those who are already unemployed. The U3 is around 9.7%?  but the U6 is well over 12% in most places and higher, and some are reporting as high as 22%? i stand to be corrected.  I still don’t vision marauding gangs drifting to the countryside looking for food/water.
A madmax scenario is fantasy vision to me.(good movie though)  One can’t live long without water. and one can’t live long without food.
I would expect a military coup from our US armed forces to happen.  Then a seccession by the states, perhaps a variety of states combining together. ie TX, LA, and OK.

    Thoughts?

I agree, I find secession to much more likely than total anarchy.  I live in Alabama, and I see people talking often about how nice it would be to break away.  We wouldn’t have to worry about the income tax, all the foreign policy problems, the national debt, wall street, etc.  Our lives would be much better if we weren’t burdened with US problems.

Robert61: The end of the world is not coming. Only the end of the world as we  known it (TEOTWAWKI). All of the major trends: economic, political, social, and religious: even geologic, are pointing toward a time of dramatic and profound change: aka THE LAST DAYS.

Some point to 2012 and believe a solar flare will cause a Pole Reversal. Others believe the trigger will be an economic meltdown.  Still others believe that war between Israel and Iran will be the trigger. Some even believe that an asteroid or meteor of sufficient size could initiate the “event”. Whatever the case, a large percentage of people feel it in their spirit, deep down in their gut, that something is going to happen. Sooner rather than later and they are preparing for that event.

Changes are clearly taking place in the earth, and I’m not talking about global warming. I am talking about changes in the magnetic field, and the mass and gravity of the earth. Earthquakes are indeed occuring in “divers places” as evidenced by the recent 3.2 quake in Illinois of all places, and governments are in a quandry as to what it all means.

Clearly, Americans are ready for Revolution, a new burst of Freedom, and a changing of the Old Guard, branding both Democrats and Republicans traitors to the US Constitution and Banksters as thieves who have robbed the US Treasury.

Wall Street is nothing more than a Financial Costra Nostra that has shattered the American dream with an army of  lobbyists who have transferred American jobs and wealth offshore to line their own greedy pockets, while destroying the middle class and the American way of life.

American patriots want heads to roll in Washington, and officials who are responsible for the fiasco they call government to go to jail for malfeascence. Democrats will be swept out of office in November and should consider themselves lucky if they are not tarred and feathered first.

Republicans or conservatives should not take much pleasure in this fact since they have been complicite in the abomination called DC and if they don’t hear the will of the people; which is loud and clear:

”We want good government. A government good for America, not lobbyists. A government good for the people of America, not the political parties of America. Not for Wall Street, but for Main Street. For depositers not banksters”.

Then they will face the ire of the electorate.  Americans are ANGRY. They want heads to roll. Where is Robspierre when you need him?

Finally, an armed citizenry in America is not a threat to a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people”. So if ANY administration believes that armed citizens are a threat to the government, then THAT government has repudiated the Constitution that it has sworn to protect before Almighty God; and does not represent the American electorate. Such a government is treasonous and should be removed from office by whatever means are necessary. That’s our heritage. Thats our Constitution. Thats our inalienable right from Natures God.

WOW! A sign of whats to come with the “New World Order”??

From 1. Jan. 2011, every transaction above 1,500 euros between natural persons and businesses, or between businesses, will not be considered legal if it is done in cash. Transactions will have to be done through debit or credit cards”

2012. my gut feeling for years has been a magnetic pole shift/reversal. I can’t prove it, (i am not a scientist) but i feel thats what to expect. I thought i was the only one who thought about that.
Other than that it doesn’t hurt to prep, expect the worse, hope for the best.

And lastly, the states created the federal govt, not the other way around. The individual states have gun laws, driving laws, voting laws etc.  Sheeple, oops I mean’t people, generally think the fed created the states.  But you and I know otherwise. Washington DC has the strictest gun laws in the nation, but, it’s not a state. It is comprised of federal laws for gun control.

I don’t think any individual state will secede and go it alone. I think the states will start to join neighboring states to create a new state or region and drop the fed like a dirty wash cloth.

well i was going to bring it all to a point, but lost my point of concentration.
