The Last Frontier For Gun Control: Washington Court Rules In Favor Of Seattle’s “Gun Violence” Tax

Two years ago, the president of the Seattle City Council offered a rather ludicrous proposition. He wanted Seattle to place a new tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition within the city limits. Ammo would cost an additional 2-5 cents per round, and a firearm would cost an extra $25. But what was even more absurd than the tax itself, is what the money would be going toward. The tax was supposed to pay for gun violence prevention programs and research.

The way City Council President Tim Burgess explained it, this “gun violence” tax would help offset the costs the city pays to treat gunshot victims. Essentially, it was a tax levied on responsible law abiding gun owners, to pay for the actions of violent criminals.

Despite how utterly stupid that sounds, the proposal passed. However, it didn’t have the desired effect. To the surprise of no one who actually understands the relationship between private firearm ownership and crime rates, the violent crime rate in Seattle has dramatically increased since the tax was put in place. It also brought in only a small fraction of the revenue that the city council was expecting. In short, the tax was a total failure.

So it’s no surprise that the tax has faced a lawsuit over the fact that Washington has a law that prevents municipalities from regulating firearms. Unfortunately, the Washington Supreme Court recently ruled against the lawsuit on the grounds that taxes aren’t the same as regulations, and cities are well within their right to levy sales taxes.

Regardless of whether the court’s decision was right or wrong, it certainly sets a dangerous precedent. As an article from Breitbart recently pointed out, it opens a new avenue for gun control activists to hamper the Second Amendment.

On August 10 Washington’s high court sided with the City of Seattle, which adopted a “gun violence tax” in a strategy to slither around the state preemption law that placed exclusive authority for regulating firearms in the hands of the State Legislature. And this new scheme could be coming to any city that has an anti-gun rights Mayor and City Council.

In Seattle’s case, the tax is $25 on the sale of each firearm, plus two to five cents for each round of ammunition sold. This threat takes on even more sinister dimensions when one considers the potential for cities to simply up the fee. Seattle started with $25 per gun, but what if they want to raise that to $100, $500 or even $1,000?

It opens the door wide to making gun ownership prohibitively expensive for average citizens. Essentially, Washington’s Supreme Court just handed the gun prohibition lobby and its allies in government a new strategy: If they can’t ban or regulate gun ownership out of existence, they will simply tax it into oblivion.

I think deep down we all know that this is probably the real intent behind Seattle’s gun tax. The left has tried many times to regulate privately owned firearms out of existence, and in America they have failed far more often than they have succeeded. They’re always looking for a new underhanded approach to gun control and this is it. Firearm and ammunition taxes aren’t about reducing gun violence and saving lives. They’re about exploiting a legal loophole to make firearms too expensive for ordinary people to own.

Wow, this will be a great revenue generator for the NRA. Hey all you cheap-a$$ life members, time to donate. Let the propaganda mail flow to the socialist members now.😁

      • Paranoid says:

Oh buzz off; I’ve been a member of the NRA close to 50 years and if it wasn’t for them and 2-3 other groups we wouldn’t have any rights. I’ll agree the NRA doe compromise more than I like. But if you didn’t live in the dark days of the 60s&70s you have no idea how bad it was, and how much has been done.

BUSTED: Parents Catch FBI in Plot to Force Mentally Ill Son to Be a Right Wing Terrorist

The parents of a severely mentally disabled man are speaking out on how the FBI groomed him as a right wing terrorist, knowing he’s paranoid schizophrenic.

Through the hundreds of ‘foiled terror plots’ the FBI has ‘busted’ over the years, many of them have been focused on people of Middle Eastern descent or people associated with ISIS or Al Qaeda. This time, in the case of Jerry Drake Varnell, the 23-year-old diagnosed schizophrenic, accused of attempting to bomb a bank, the FBI fomented terror from a right wing dialogue.

In a June meeting with the agent, according to FBI documents, Varnell described himself as a believer in “Three Percenter” ideology, a right wing group claiming to be committed to standing against and exposing corruption and injustice.

According to federal documents, Varnell drove what he believed was a stolen van containing a 1,000-pound ammonium nitrate bomb on Saturday morning to blow up an Oklahoma City bank. Vile, indeed.

Yep. None of bastards can pass up a chance for more tax revenue.
We have to pay an “air tax” for builds with upper stories that extend beyond the foundation and above city/public property.

Oh, and a rain water run-off tax for all the area of our parking lots.

        It never ends…

      • Yahooie says:

It would not be a surprise to see that tax in Maryland. That state has never seen a tax it didn’t like. There are a few other states in the east with a similar view.

    • CrackSummSkulls says:

This Violates the US Constitution. Thou shall NOT INFRINGE!! The Politicians who voted for this, need to be put in prison for violation of their Oath to Office as they were sworn to uphold the Constitution.

And of course the Judges out there are Communists, and also need to be put in Prison.

Taxation of Guns-2nd Amendment would be like Taxing Amendment 1 Freedom of Speech. You are taxed every time you speak. Totally Un-Constitutional Guns and ammo should be totally TAX Exempt.

  2. Great , Now my guns are worth more than ever. Just need a way to find a buyer

  3. This should help my gun resale value

  4. GETTING REAL says:

Does this come under taxation without representation ?

  5. The State just may have opened the door to its own demise.

Anytime any Country overpriced an item a black market arose.

This will motivate entrepreneurial new gum manufacturers. Gold and silver and barter will be used. In fact this may be our saving grace. There will be no way to stop it. When guns are taxed, only Patriots will have guns.

Dumb SOBs. They are going to be inundated with 2,000 Gucci bags for $19.99.

  6. Man on the inside says:

We will just buy ammo out of state in group buys, same thing with guns…. nothing will change. most of us have multiple firearms and butt tons of ammo anyway….

  7. I bought spelt flour. I have a bucket of it and not that crazy about the taste.
I have a large heavy hardcover book with lots of pictures. I like pretty pictures.
Anyway, it is a cookbook for vegtables but it has a recipe for using spelt flour.

“Vegtable Literacy” by: Deborah Madison ISBN 978-1-60774-191-6 $40.00 ($46.00 Canada)

    4 tablespoons butter
1 cup spelt flour (or white whole wheat flour)
    1 cup stoneground organic cornmeal
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon sea salt
    2 eggs lightly beaten
    2 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons honey or sugar (optional
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Butter 10 inch cast-iron skillet. Heat oven 375 degrees F.

    Variations:
With: Corn Kernels, Cream on Top, or raspberries/blackberries.

Butter and enjoy. The book has detailed instructions but simply heat the buttered skillet. Sift dry ingredients into bowl. Mix liquids in separate bowl. Combine. Pour batter into skillet. Bake on middle rack until browned and springy to the touch. Approximately 25 minutes.

(Could do this in a camp fire in Dutch Oven.)

      • grandee says:

        i was gonna say !

just like my corn bread recipe i’ve used for over 40 yrs.

the corn meal i use now is from my very own, home grown, seed saved heirloom, Stowells Evergreen sweet corn.

first pkg of seed bought here-then raised and saved by me for past three years. ht tp://www.rareseeds.com/stowells-evergreen-sweet-corn/

it makes FINE corn bread 🙂

        • Wilson says:

So does popcorn when you buy just the kernels, no oils, seasonings, plain kernels in a jar like Orville Reddenbachers. Grind it with a mill to a coarse texture. I tried this method with a small jar of O.R. and found out I liked it. Now I but 25# bas at Sam’s Club.

          • Traitor Hator says:

I worked in a feed mill. Rolled corn is made by hitting the corn with steam to soften it for the rollers. So it is kind of sterilized pre cooked? It’s animal grade but cheap.

          • grandee says:

i have also grown heirloom indian corn (not for decoration kind) and it works as well.

I have it all in really big jars. call it “prepper gold” looks pretty sitting there.

    • Gandhi says:

Recipe for disaster: allow more taxes, allow mobs to destroy historical monuments, enable the NRA to help politicians pass background check requirements, become a Christian, allow the goobermint to know you are a Christian, pay more money to NRA to hope to get something back that belongs to you, check the box that says you are “white” on the gun form.

    • Nailbanger says:

Isnt the spelt flour primarily used for pasta?

    • laura ann says:

B : I use mainly amaranth, millet flour and almond flour and sometimes mix them together. Used for cake, cookie baking. I make flat bread or tortillas. I did try spelt, sorghum flour once, didn’t like. I bought small bags online of various flours just to try out first. Give amaranth or brown rice flour a try. Mild taste. Oat flour is ok. I add a little corn starch for better baking results in cakes, other ingred.: avocado oil, almond milk, Greek yogurt, etc. Am trying to avoid gluten products because most are gmo.

  8. Seattle needs to place a tax on Negros and illegal Mexicans not guns. The Negro population of Seattle is eight percent but they do one half of the murders. Add illegal Mexicans and these two beloved groups to libtards in Seattle are likely involved in sixty percent of the murders.

  9. Press 9 for English says:

If the fatboy pops an EMP over the former US..might be the best thing to happen for it.

  10. Jim in Va. says:

Everybody will just go to the next jurisdiction to buy their guns and ammo..thus no tax money, fewer jobs and customers. Next step will be for people to move out of the state to a friendlier location. Seattle also raised minimum wages to 15.00 so some business went out of business and others cut back on the help. So who benefited from it? Certainly not the customers.

    • Gandhi says:

Nope, NRA made sure you need background checks so they will know if you need to pay taxes. Thanks NRA🤡 Your slave a$$ ain’t going to another jurisdiction without getting a felony.

  11. YGBSM says:

Even better for when the Civil War comes. The Snowflake Pajamaboys will not have any guns! Easy Peasy!

  12. Very-Concerned-Citizen says:

So, so Ridiculous!! The end goal is to get rid of guns and ammo period.

  13. Very-Concerned-Citizen says:

How has this country honestly gotten so out of control? ?

  14. Tactical Beard says:

    Acts:1631
So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

  15. TEST says:

Since gun crime is generally caused by FATHERLESS BOYS, we need to tax the left for creating nanny state where women live off the leftist gov’t as their “husband.” Hollywierd and the music industry are the a leading un-lights behind this, so I suggest we tax Ben Affleck, Mahdoona, the Kartrashians, as well the gay-uber-alles Nazis. I say start at 99.9%

Truth is, the left is taking over this country by taking over the culture, the music, the media (entertainment and fake news) and push the fascist gay Nazis down our throats. Another key is doing a judicial coup d’etat. Just ask that couple in Oregon who owned Melissa’s Sweet Cakes, who declined to bake a wedding cake for a gay “marriage.” Their financial lives were destroyed by someone who calls himself a judge. Similarly, California DEMOCRATICALLY rejected gay marriage – until some gay judge overrode the will of the people. Similarly, the Bolsheviks only had around 20% support when they took over Russia. Hitler also started out with minority support. But they use propaganda, lies, oppression, faux “judges” (see Hitler’s judge Roland Friesler for a good example), etc.

The West is in as precarious position as it ever was. Those of you who continue to stand up are, in fact, those of whom it will eventually be said again ‘Never has so much been owed by so many to so few.” In this case, our fight is non-violent, and by the pen, education, and communication. I deeply dislike Margaret Mead, but she had this one right: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

  16. RMS1911 says:

Now somebody can appeal this and it will be over turned as an infringement by a higher court or the supreme Court.

  17. Anonymous says:

If we can have a tax on guns and ammunition, a specific guaranteed right, why can we not also have the same on the vote, a poll tax. with the money going to control illegal voters and vote fraud?

  18. Warchild Dammit! says:

Any way you can help out the few good folks stuck behind enemy lines, order cases on net and have em come for a visit and pickup, let em gather some bucks from the few good folks there and put together large orders,no need for black market…..,yet.

I would also say that any who have monies have for years stocked up,ammo seems to be reasonable cost in the big picture,no matter where you live this could be coming your way,you have been warned.

  19. Horse'sass says:

And if things weren’t already confusing enough.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-17/decentralize-gun-laws

I could see the Feds blackmailing the states via withholding of funds unless they individually enact restrictive gun legislationat the state and local levels, even though it may appear that states are trying to use the protection afforded by the 2nd amendment at the Federal level to defeat local gun control. The whole thing may therefore backfire. The states, by clinging to the Federal government for citizens’ 2nd amendment rights may find that they have exposed their weakness, that if the FEds can get states to end around the 2nd amendment, then this will result eventually in a 50 state gun ban which achieves the same result as if enacting a national gun ban at the Federal level.

  20. Houston/Cypress/Katy/Shtf says:

Mac, not to tell you what to do on this site, but the site of michelle Obamas face makes my stomock sick looking at that man, thing or it. What a repulsive photo.

    HCKS.

  21. Cook County, Il. Chicago area, additional $25 tax per gun and 5 cent tax per bullet. These are on top of the normal 10% sales tax. Doesn’t stop crime. Doesn’t go to treat gunshot victims as stated. Goes into the general revenue fund, where the politicians can funnel the money to their supporters. Cook County just enacted a sugar tax on soft drinks, including Gatorade. 1 cent per ounce. A 20 ounce bottle of pop costs an additional 20 cents. The communists are in control now. This is not a free country. Do not be in denial.

  22. LostinSeattle says:

The publicly stated goal is to make this statewide,
if that works then other states will follow.

Then they will take a “reasonable” % amount of taxation and increase it enormously.

  23. bb in GA says:

The dubious Constitutionality of this tax becomes evident when you shift it to the First Amendment.

In order to publish in the City of Seattle you must pay a $25 tax on printing equipment, and 2 – 5 cents per paper copy of the published material. Also, one cent tax on every view, download or cybercopy made of your published material.

    There that fixed it.

Or how about. Every preacher, rabbi, imam, etc in the City of Seattle will pay a $25 Professional Tax. Any public talks, sermons, etc. will be taxed at the rate of $0.001 per word and all sermons, talks, teachings must be recorded for tax purposes.

    Yeah, that’s Constitutional….

    <bb

  24. the blame-e says:

The gun control freaks don’t do anything about the biggest gun crazy out there — the U.S. Government. Do you think the U.S. Government pays tax on the 6-billion rounds of hollow point ammunition they have bought over the past 5-years (for domestic consumption)?

Nothing says “I love you” like when your local police departments, private security, DHS, and your own government doesn’t just shoot you with any old bullet.

  25. the blame-e says:

Let me tell you about Seattle.

I lived there for ten-years. They are a sanctuary city, meaning that they hate “Americans.” True Americans applies only those people from Seattle. What Seattle loves, loves, loves, loves are “illegals, the undocumented, aliens, foreigners, migrants, un-escorted children, boat people and refugees.”

Seattle loves migrants, except for American migrants. Seattle hates American migrants. If you are an American Citizen chased out of the American economic dead zones of the Northeast and migrate to Seattle to live — you get the “Seattle Freeze.” Seattle hates Americans. Hates anybody from the Northeast. They hate anybody not educated in their sh*t school, the University of Washington.

Seattle is a real sh*t show. And now it is just another sh*t show, looking more like Detroit, Flint, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Philadelphia, New York, with each day that goes by. Seattle: a sprawling cesspool with only one highway, and traffic backed up from south of Tacoma all the way to Burlington. And the whole state of Washington is right behind Seattle.

  26. Repeat after me, “we live in post constitution America”. There are no rights. Who did this to us? The propaganda machine controls almost everybody’s thoughts. Silence the propaganda machine. And get rid of your damned television. Don’t let your kids watch that garbage. Indoctrination is embedded in almost every show. Hollywood gets money from the Feds to include the social agenda in the message.

  27. Godsoldier says:

Here is a quote from the movie (WE WERE MEN) when mel gibson asked. Sam Elliott if he was getting a rifle he replied “Im sure there will be plenty laying around”

  28. Kannin says:

Seattle has at least 9 cities on it’s boarders that will be happy to pick up some extra revenue from gun and ammo buyers.

No different than all the restaurants picking up extra bizz when those idiots raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

    • the blame-e says:

You’ve heard of the “Soda Tax” in places like Philadelphia? Well, in Seattle (where they too have a “Soda Tax”), and now the “Gun Tax” and the “Ammo Tax.”

Look to Philadelphia and what happened when the crooked politicians taxed soda. The people crossed the river to New Jersey for their Coca Cola.

Same thing in Seattle. I hear Idaho is doing a big business in guns, ammo, and soda.

      Stupid A** Democrats.

Wait until they set-up road blocks to search vehicles for what is legal anyway.

  29. Kannin says:

Seattle has at least 9 cities on it’s boarders who’s gun dealers will be happy to pick up the extra bizz.

No different than all of the restaurants that are picking up the restaurant bizz since those idiots raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

  30. Larry says:

Sounds like infringement. Anyway the municipality code really only supposed to apply to city employees but somehow everyone just assumes now those are everyone’s rules within the city. But who has the time to research and say and do the right thing in court. I’m guessing the whole racket benefits lawyers and court employees so they don’t want to know. But hey, you can plea to a lesser charge and we all make our money pretty easy. That be the path of least resistance I guess that’s why we put up with it. Plain old ignorance mainly….of history and the whole fight to build what we have/had. For instance of another racket check out lost horizons, one word, dotcom.

  31. If_i_get_lucky says:

What if the same municipality decided to put a tax on a vote in local, state or federal election. Would the same court look at it same way?
I understand that we have a protection from a pool tax, but apparently the same judges would not apply same principle to “keep and bear arms” tax.
Does this mean, that we would have to pay to be able to exercise the right to keep and bear arms?
I mean, I understand the fact that I may be unable to afford an arm ( the militia will provide it for us).
Let me look at it from a deferent perspective: The judgment/reasoning said that the municipalities are well within the right to levy taxes, What if the same municipalities will levy taxes on freedom of speech, or freedom of religion, or freedom of assembly, or even worse; freedom to fair trail?
Now, everyone, who is unable to pay the tax is no longer ineligible for public defender???

  32. Kevin says:

This is yet ANOTHER reason us folks here on the Eastern side of Washington, want to secede and form our own state. The difference between Western Washington’s limp wrist liberals and Eastern Washington’s hunter/farmers, could not be more apparent.

Those son’s a b!tches in Seattle DO NOT REPRESENT us good ‘ol boys here in the foothills of the Blues, or the Northern reaches next to Idaho’s Panhandle.
