Scientists Discover New Fault Line Off The Coast Of Alaska – Could Produce Fukushima Size Tsunamis

    economy-tsunami

Every region is associated with at least one type of natural disaster. If you live in the Midwest you have tornadoes to contend with, and in the South you have to worry about hurricanes. Folks in New England have to worry about snowstorms, and people who live in the West need to consider earthquakes and forest fires.

We take these facts for granted. We assume that certain places are in the path of specific disasters, and immune to others. That however, isn’t the case when it comes to tsunamis. At least not for practical purposes. That’s because the scientific community is still discovering new underwater fault lines that have the potential to cause devastating tsunamis. If you live on a coastline, your home could be at risk of being swept away and you wouldn’t even know it. In fact, scientists have just discovered a new fault off the coast of Alaska that could produce a tsunami that is the same size as the wave that wrecked Fukushima.

Scientists probing under the seafloor off Alaska have found a geologic fault they say signals significant risk of a mega-tsunami in future.

The feature closely resembles one that produced the 2011 Tohoku tsunami off Japan, killing some 20,000 people and melting down three nuclear reactors.

Writing in Nature Geoscience, the team warn a large tsunami in in the area ‘could have devastating consequences to coastal communities locally in Alaska and around the Pacific Ocean’

Tsunami waves triggered by the newly discovered fault could hit more southerly North American coasts, Hawaii and other parts of the Pacific, the researchers claim.

Similar structures may lurk undiscovered in other areas of the world, they warn.

The discovery ‘suggests this part of Alaska is particularly prone to tsunami generation,’ said study lead author Dr Anne Bécel of Columbia University, New York.

‘The possibility that such features are widespread is of global significance.’

The fault is roughly 600 miles off the coast of Anchorage, and according to one of the coauthors of the study, it could “make a tsunami a lot more effective.” However, this is hardly the first time that scientist have discovered a fault with devastating potential in a region that they weren’t originally expecting to find it.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone, which lies mainly off the coast of Washington and Oregon, is capable of causing a 9.0 earthquake that would undoubtedly spawn a massive tsunami. The scientific community was completely unaware of this subduction zone until a few decades ago, because it will go centuries without producing any earthquakes. But on the rare occasion that it does, they are humbling. If the Cascadia fault erupted today, it would be the most destructive natural disaster in American history.

In the Pacific Northwest, the area of impact will cover* some hundred and forty thousand square miles, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Salem (the capital city of Oregon), Olympia (the capital of Washington), and some seven million people. When the next full-margin rupture happens, that region will suffer the worst natural disaster in the history of North America. Roughly three thousand people died in San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake. Almost two thousand died in Hurricane Katrina. Almost three hundred died in Hurricane Sandy. FEMA projects that nearly thirteen thousand people will die in the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami. Another twenty-seven thousand will be injured, and the agency expects that it will need to provide shelter for a million displaced people, and food and water for another two and a half million. “This is one time that I’m hoping all the science is wrong, and it won’t happen for another thousand years,” Murphy says.

The sobering fact of the matter is that there is still a lot we don’t know about our own planet. Not only can a disaster strike anywhere, but certain disasters can strike in places where we least expect them to, and where we are the least prepared for them. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for any situation. Mother nature is cruel and ruthless, and she doesn’t care where you live or what you think you’re ready for.

Hi folks … Well I’m sitting right on the Cascadian subduction zone and anyone else in the Pacific NW might want to check out cascadian.orgfree.com. This site covers about everything and will save you a lot of random searching for info. He also posts leads to self sufficient systems that are worth checking out. There’s also a deep fault that runs from the PNW to the New Madrid system in Tennessee, so if it really starts to shake, it may not stay ‘local’!

Let er rip. Too many people . We need a culling. Ya know the population reduction mentioned on those Georgia guide stones.

        Old Guy
I took the time to study the Georgia Guide stones.
You would be amazed to know that the essential information is in there.
The globalists are not worried to reveal THE INFORMATION, they know that those who will discover the reason of its existence will keep their mouth shut.
Those who defaced it… well, I feel sorry for them.

    5. aljamo says:

If Fukushima produced a wave that high as in the pic above most of the people in Japan would have been washed out to sea. Not bad enough that humanity has to deal with weather manipulation by human numbskull brainiacs, mother nature is the real deal, an extinction level event to bring out the new drawing board is possible.

      • watching and waiting says:

A wave like that I think would be a extinction event.

Off the coast of Africa, is an island and I forget the name but a very large part of the island, and I think the island has been volcanic has from earthquakes, split and if it fell into the Atlantic ocean it would send a wave towards the east coast over 100 feet tall, 600 mph, so I’ve been told in reports.

    7. Press 9 for English says:

      Let er rip!

    8. Press 9 for English says:

As long as it takes the rest of the west coast with it then I say once again…let er frigging rip!

P.S. Actually I would prefer to see simultaneous tsunamis off both the West and East Coasts.

    9. Concerned-Citizen! says:

Get ready folks, we are ALL going to die, one way or another. . . . . . . .

    10. Brian says:

Earthquakes will happen and thus tsunamis. Volcanoes will erupt. The question is always when and will they erupt in our lifetimes. God decides when. The Bible speaks os a time of trouble called the Tribuation which the Jews refer to as the “time of Jacob’s troubles”. I know that there have been a lot of false warnings by people who have thought they had figured everything out. I haven’t but It really seems that a world of trouble will start happening after late September of this year. You either beieve in it or you don’t. I believe.

    11. Dr. Richard says:

The Fukushima tsunami was between 2 and 40 meters (6′ and 133′) high depending on the location with the lowest levels recorded in Chile. Most of the worst damaged areas (e.g. Sendai) had 30′ to 50′ high waves. Very few locations saw waves much higher as it took very specific land patterns to force the wave to the 40 meter height in Miyako city.

The wave in the picture appears to be 500′ or higher based on the high rise buildings being ~10 stories. For Fukushima or a similar event, getting to the 5th floor or higher would likely be a life saving move. For the asteroid impact level wave in the picture, no height would be enough to survive the wave.

    12. I remember the Big One in 1964. Back when there wasn’t much in Alaska. Lowell Thomas had a home near the top of a small mountain. When the shaking stopped, it was half way down the hill. Anchorage got hit real hard. If it happened today, sheesh.

    13. Warchild Dammit! says:

Useless to me as nothing I can do about it.While not in the range even if I was no amount of preps will defend one from a tsunami, you are there when happens probably just toast.

    14. Beaumont says:

I thought it was interesting to discuss, but not a revelation; Alaska is full of volcanism.

      • Paranoid says:

As A Geologist yours is the best comment. Alaska has huge earthquakes THIS FAULT IS NOTHING NEW TO WORRY ABOUT. They didn’t get the tallest MT in N America and all those volcanoes because it’s a stable place.

    15. rellik says:

I live in a place that is
      subject to about every
      natural disaster you can
      imagine, I’ve been through a
few of them, yet people pay
      a small fortune to vacation
      here.
The best bet is to prepare
      for “stuff”, which I do.
      Personally for me the scariest
      stuff is man caused.
I can deal with mother nature.
I can walk up to a erupting volcano
today, if I wish, my house is shaken daily
      by earthquakes.
      Having said that,
my world would be so much better
off, if there were no Democrats
and Moslems. There is only one
      way to deal with them.

      We harvested our first white
      pineapple last week.
      I’m a fruit racist and I don’t do
      yellow pineapples.
Food dehydrators are going full bore.

    16. Expectnomercy says:

Murphy’s law is gonna rule!!! Gotta love it when herds of sheep stampede. Alls good til it ain’t.

    17. Anonymous says:

Mother Nature isn’t “cruel and ruthless”. People the ones who’re cruel and ruthless–to themselves–for not living on only what Mother Nature gives them. She’s only doing them a favor when she knocks them down from their delirium of thinking she can’t function without their “brilliance”.
