In what appears to be unrelated cases, two people in the United Kingdom have been diagnosed with monkeypox.  There is no link between the two patients, however, both were said to have contracted the disease in Nigeria before entering the UK.

The second patient is being treated in a specialist infectious disease unit at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, after being transferred from Blackpool Victoria Hospital. It comes after a Nigerian resident was diagnosed with the disease in Cornwall last week. The infection had never previously been diagnosed in the United Kingdom, Public Health England said.

Mike Beadsworth, the clinical director of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit at the Liverpool hospital, said in a statement that there was “currently no risk to other staff, patients or visitors” from the monkeypox, and urged people to continue to only visit emergency rooms if their cases are serious. “The patient is being cared for on our specialist infectious and tropical diseases unit, by highly trained staff who are experienced in dealing with a variety of infectious diseases,” he said.

“We know that in September 2017, Nigeria experienced a large sustained outbreak of monkeypox,” said Nick Phin, the deputy director of the National Infection Service at PHE, in a statement. “It is likely that monkeypox continues to circulate in Nigeria and could, therefore, affect travelers who are returning from this part of the world.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, monkeypox reemerged in Nigeria in 2017.

In Nigeria, before 2017 the most recent case of human monkeypox had been reported in 1978. By mid-November 2017, a large outbreak caused by the West African clade resulted in 146 suspected cases and 42 laboratory-confirmed cases from 14 states. Although the source is unknown, multiple sources are suspected. –Centers for Disease Control

According to CNN, monkeypox is a rare viral infection that typically only leads to mild illness and does not spread easily between people. The PHE said its symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and rash. People usually recover within a few weeks, though the virus can lead to serious illness in some cases.

The way these two cases came about was also extremely rare, said Phin. “It is very unusual to see two cases in such a relatively short space of time. We are working hard to contact individuals, including healthcare workers, that might have come into contact with the individual to provide information and health advice,” Phin added.

The CDC also claims that of those who contract monkeypox, one in ten cases end up resulting in death.

Off Topic: I have recently been focusing on SHTF communications and was wondering what you guys are relying upon? But only with respect to obtaining information.

The reason I ask is that short wave kind of stinks. Bad sound quality and lousy channels. It would be my last resort. I thought communicating with trucks might be a good source of SHTF information.

I don’t have much experience but I also think AM Radio might be good option. I am looking at buying Tecsun AN-200 AM/MW Rotatable Tuneable Loop Gain Radio Antenna(No Battery Needed)

Smart preppers doing very short range communication over a tribe might choose very inexpensive AM transmitters. These are routinely used by real estate agents where anyone can tune in ontheir am radio to receive.

Of course it is not encrypted. But you could make a comm system that would work on a shoestring budget.

Otherwise post-collapse, you coud use old school military surplus dynamo field radios. Or you could wire up the old style telephones but you need a switchboard operator.

        Think outside the box.

        • Maranatha says:

A landline type deal for neighbors can be set up using military phones and rechargable batteries. That doesn’t broadcast for triangulation. The weakness is the battery. This is why I suggested the other.

It’s useful to have a home intecomm system as you listen in to any of those rooms as well as communicate without hollering. This is very useful on a farm like to the barn, the workshed, the root cellar, the storm cellar, etc.

Once you get into truck communications, then range and line of sight are big issues and interference. How far away are they going to be routinely and at the upper limit?

      • Boyo says:

With all do respect,. I do not know your situation or technical level etc, but first take stock of who’s with you and how far away is your closest ally, and next closest. Who do you intend to listen to? Who do you wish to talk over distance to?
Do they have like interest in investing for this? You don’t want to be the only kid that can listen to AM signals, but if no one is broadcasting… That includes a dying AM format . Some modern radios don’t even bother with the AM band because it’s too noisy. Limited AM radios would mean fewer to potentially listen in on of course…

        Good luck.

        • Justice says:

Boyo, my technical level is low and I’m not willing to put in much effort to become very knowledgeable. My brother has all 3 Ham radio licenses, so he has that covered. Everybody says short wave is “the way” but it’s more than I want to get involved in.

Because of this I originally choose CB radio as my com system. I just got the equipment and will be spending the next few months experimenting with it. My base station has SSB and that looks promising.

I need to keep looking but a don’t want to make a big thing out of communications. It is rather technical and I want to Keep It Simple as possible.

          • Justice says:

I am about 1 mile from I-70, this was a factor in choosing CB technology (others are Simplicity and Cost).

            This is my setup:

            1. Galaxy DX-2547 AM/SSB CB Base Station w/ Freq Counter, Talkback & Roger Beep (I got it returned at a really good price)

            2. A car/mobile unit

            3. 3 Hand held motorola’s (returned good price) with decent external antennas. They can act as mobile base units or as walkie talkies. There are 3 housing developments around me (within 2 miles), these would allow us to communicate.

To get access to outside news I have a Tecsun PL-360 Digital PLL Portable AM/FM Shortwave Radio.

I hope this is a pretty good base setup because I have already spent more than I wanted. This is NOT a hobby I want to pursue.

Thanks. If I am missing something important, any suggestions are appreciated.

I am no radio guru or hobbyist.
I think I can however give a couple pieces of advice as you continue in your endeavors.

Don’t panic. Don’t impulse buy. Don’t ever take a single source of information as the holy scripture.

Research. I HATE Amazon, but I do love using them only for reviews (normal word of mouth these days is just not fast enough and too many product offerings). There I can get unlimited, freely given praise of a brand as well as horror stories on an item. I love the horror stories as they might tell me if the item or owner is flawed. In your researching, don’t pass over hobby, or military forums. Put out a questions, preferably at the beginning of a forum. Youtube – unbelievable channels for a prepper, hobbyists, technical etc. still exist.

              Network. Ears and eyes open.

One can at a time. Don’t panic.

Only two people? How racist! When will the other people of the UK be exposed to this rich and exciting cultural and racial diversity? By the way, monkeypox looks very similar to anthrax

    5. Maranatha says:

There are infections which are spread by fomites. These are most typically thought of as respiratory droplets from fluids like saliva and sputum that are breathed or forcibly coughed up and spewed or sneezed.

But additionally fomites can be from skin contact when the virons or bacteria actually lives on the skin or is transferred to the skin. In addition, the mucous membranes will ooze the infection, so the eyes, the nose, the mouth, sexual orifices, even the ears. But I have seen kids do this and unthinking adults. When they wash their hands, they all use the same towel in a home. Now visitors may also use that same hand towel. This is a very BAD HABIT that needs to end. It is nonsensical. You should NEVER do that.

There are cases of STDs where the infected person spread the illness to their child either during delivery, or when the child washed their hands, they washed their face too and used that hand towel. This example is often taught in microbiology classes. The child presents with an odd eye infection and after a big rigamarole, after much testing, they are alarmed as they have an STD infection when by all accounts they should not. The eye fuids contains the pathogen, and when the kid washed their face, and it transfered.

Please everyone halt using the same handtowel. I bet your family avoids illness this flu season. Today the authorities in the UK informed folks that monkeypox spreads this way and through sleeping on the same bed sheets and getting in contact with fomites.

The dirtiest surface on a plane is not the toilet…which is bad enough and you should clean that before using, but the pull down tray. When tested, it was filthy and they are supposed to be sanitized.

The dirtiest thing in your home is the dish sponge. Because it’s used to clean debris off dishes and pots containing bits of food, even though you use soap, it cultures bacteria. This and the plug for the sink when tested are always innundated with harmful bacteria. If you were to be washing dishes, and rub your eyes, you could get a nasty infection. This is why many dishsoaps contain bleach. Routinely in a restaurant they will add a little bleach in the soap in the sink when washing dishes.

You’re supposed to heat the dish sponge in the microwave for a few seconds and this significantly reduces this bacterial risk. When you something persistant like cheese on a dish sponge, you’re supposed to discard it.

Pet owners are very foolish about cleanliness especially cat owners and where they allow the cat to sit in the kitchen like counters and even the table! This is very silly as that is terrible thing to allow as you could easily get sick. This cat uses a litter box or walks outside and then you let it walk where it wants???

The pet bowls are full of all kinds of pathogens like worm eggs and should never be washed in the sinks or sit on the counter…especially when a pregnant lady is in the home. She could get a terrible infection and harm herself and the baby.
