Michigan Environmental Agency Won’t Let Family Protect Their Home From 80ft Sand Dune

    sand-dune

Everyone wants to live in a clean environment that is free of pollution and excessive degradation. It’s normal to want to live beside pristine forests and seas, and not have to worry about being poisoned by contaminants in the air, soil, and water. As humans we don’t always succeed in making our world clean, but it’s worth striving for.

Where problems arise in this effort, is when environmentalism forgets its priorities. Hardcore environmentalists have a habit valuing the natural world more than the humans who inhabit it. In some cases they promote ideas that are downright anti-human, like population control. They honestly don’t seem to think that it’s possible to support humanity and the environment at the same time. One must always thrive at the expense of the other.

And that attitude produces outrageous results when its adopted by the government. When the government decides that your life and property aren’t as important as the environment that surrounds it, look out. There’s a good chance that you’re going to lose everything.

That’s what a family in near Lake Michigan learned recently, when they tried to remove sand from an 80ft dune that threatens to destroy their house.

The Department of Environmental Quality has ordered the Dressler family to stop the use of trucks to move sand away from the dune as it creeps closer to their cottage in Silver Lake, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The state says that the sand in question is designated as a critical dune, thus requiring special permits to remove.

‘They’re killing us,’ said David Dressler, 58, the property owner who has been denied permission to remove the sand.

‘I’m so pissed off right now, I’m beyond words.’

And this isn’t the first time that a home has been threatened by the sand dunes in that area. The Dressler family owned a second home that was enveloped by a sand dune earlier this year. So it’s no surprise that the Dresslers believe that the state of Michigan is violating their property rights by refusing to let them protect their home.

‘It’s absolutely pathetic that they can take my rights away from me,’ Dressler said.

‘That has got to be against the law.’

Dressler and her husband said they were able to push back smaller and less active sand dunes near their cottages for about 20 years. But the last two years have been different.

Experts believe that the prevailing wind direction has changed in the past two years, driving the sand dunes towards the direction of the homes.

Wind direction, the amount of sand available and the absence of vegetation all contribute to the movement of the sand dunes, said Alan Arbogast, a professor and chairman of Michigan State University’s Geography Department.

The future of the Dressler’s property looks bleak. The state claims that they can ask for a special permit to remove the sand, but it’s likely that they won’t be allowed to remove much of it. The sands are protected and have been given a “critical status” by the government.

And that’s why the Michigan state government is willing to let this valuable home be destroyed. Because apparently, a giant pile of sand is critical to the environment, and is more important than the humans who live near it.

If I was Dressler, I would simply disregard those bureaucrats and keep removing as much of that sand as possible. All I would care about is saving the home if at all possible. F#$% those govt. employees. They don’t care about the public anyway.

I grew up on lake Michigan. Lived on the sand dunes and in the water. I remember when Manley Sand Company mined dozens of sand dunes for the concrete block manufacturing company down the road.

Nothing better for making concrete blocks than Lake Michigan sand. One of the really big dunes and my favorite to play on, swallowed a kid a few years ago.

        Who knew ??? 🙂

        • Yahooie says:

DK, I grew up in Michigan also but on the Lake Huron side. Still have family up there.

I visited the dunes way back when and recall being told stories of them consuming all sorts of things as they moved with the wind.

The dunes are fun to visit and ride dune buggies over–or is that still allowed. State gov there seems to be very strange these days.

      • hammerhead says:

Im very familiar with this area , and that dune .
Its a state park , these dunes have been swallowing up cottages (which is beside a lake) for decades.
Its like buying a home in a subdivision , you know the rules when you buy a house there , these folks knew the risk as they are real estate investors .
And honestly , there really isnt anyway to stop this dune , its just too big .

    3. Anticommie says:

The only reason to have a government is to protect private property. Once a government fails to do that it needs to be destroyed. This government not only fails to protect but doesn’t recognize anything as private.

    4. the blame-e says:

This situation reminds of George Carlin, who told the story about the family in Hawaii that built their house in front of an active volcano and now wonders why they have lava in the living room.

    5. TEST says:

As soon as it threatens Learjet leftist Michael Moore’s $5.2 mm home nearby at Torch Lake – see http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2015/08/michael_moores_former_northern.html – they will change the laws.

    6. Do these Dresslers have no imagination.

Bag the sand, dudes. Then when it is nicely contained on the beach, approach the head ass-in-charge with a proposition. If he allows you to sell the sand bags, you’ll split the profits with him.

Chances are he’ll want the whole thing to himself and he’ll send trucks over to steal your sand.

      😂

    7. Archivist says:

I’m wondering why stupid people build on or around sand dunes anyway. It’s like building a house next to a hog farm and then complaining about the smell. I’ve seen that happen. Or even better, in a town I used to live in, some fools from up north moved into an old house that they wanted to restore. Then they complained because the train going by in the street right in front of the house was shaking it. It’s not like the railroad came after they bought the house, as the railroad was put there before the Civil War.

    8. Sgt. Dale says:

Hells Bells. Why don’t they start a CAT day care.

      Sgt.

    9. Asshat says:

Rent a loader and dump truck and dump it on EPA doorstep .

    10. Houston/Cypress/Texas/Shtf says:

I see civil and revolutionary war on the horizon. We are not every going to gain back control as a people. Like I tell my woman, bad things will come our way..

That is Michigan, this is Texas, and we don’t have bullshit like that going on down here. I head recently from source that Americans are abandoning properties by the shit load on California, and that they are not defauting on mortgages, they are simply packing up and leaving the state and that over 150 homes were abandoned in the last 2 months. A lot of the people are high income people and career people, a lot of them are moving the business operations here. It seems according to the source that this just started to happen by the hundreds in the last 3 or more months. They simply pull the plug on the mortgage, pack up and leave the state.

      HCKS.

Michigan Environmental Agency Won’t Let Family Protect Their Home From 80ft Sand Dune

Seems to me the State of Michigan should be trying to protect this family from themselves. Building a house near active dunes tells me their IQ is below room temperature. “The foolish man built his house upon the sand, the foolish man built his house upon the sand…”

    12. Southern AZ says:

If the state is not allowing them to remove the state’s encroaching sand from their own property, it is a taking. If they built their house on land leased from the state, they are screwed. Seems like a good real estate/property lawyer could make the case that if the state won’t allow them to maintain their own property, the state should pay them the fair market value (without sand) and let nature take its course on the state’s nickel.

    13. Son of the Revolution says:

Everyone that lives up there or ever travels to LEARN about those MOVING dunes
      Knows this was inevitable
Quitcherbitchin and suck it up buttercup

The State is also a joke always pushing their perceived authority

Let me clue those people with cottages by the dunes

Yer gonna lose no matter how hard you try
      Mother Nature always wins

    14. TorresD30 says:

The Dressler family should convert part of their house to a combination animal rescue shelter / abortion clinic and watch how quickly the Government acts to prevent the sand dune from threating the property.

    15. Da Yooper says:

“Wind direction, the amount of sand available and the absence of vegetation all contribute to the movement of the sand dunes”

buy grass seed & add water use nature against itself & the state

    16. NorseMan says:

Dunes move because of wind. Construct a giant sign to block the wind or at least make the wind veer slightly. Then paint something critical of Trump or Confederates on it – the EPA won’t make you remove it!

    17. Aa-ron says:

The really odd thing about this situation is that not 500 yards from the ‘critical’ dunes that are wiping out this house is the state run off road vehicle park where you can go out with your jeep and tear up not some ‘non-critical’ dunes all day long.

    18. Houston/Cypress/Katy/Shtf says:

Hey Buttcrackofdoom, SHTF will commense soon. What a great name for a handle in such a perilous time. Sarge on the people what are moving, its real. People come here all the time telling me that I have wrong info, and now this type of stuff is happening all over the country. I am back for certain, had to take some time off to concentrate on work since business dried up and when this type of stuff happens, I have to bust ass even harder to make ends meet. Business in Houston is really slow right not for everyone. Lucky me I get it done.

      HCKS.

      The buttcrackofdoom is upon us.

    19. Sierra Dave says:

I want some free sand to fill my sandbags. Maybe you can load some trucks and come to North Texas.

    20. No One says:

Such a shame that a small plant doesn’t find itself in between their house and the dune. You know, IF that plant happen to be on some endangered species list… ‘Ol State of Mich. would spend itself bankrupt trying to save that one little plant. I bet they’d be hauling that sand away day and night….. Just say’n.
