Experts Warn: Crop Failures Could Cause Apocalyptic Scenarios

    corn

Famines have been known to cause widespread starvation, and now with crops and food being traded globally, one hiccup in the growth of just one crop could cause a massive global catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions.

In the past, a poor year for crops, whether it was too wet or too dry, rarely impacted those outside the immediate region. Only those in close proximity to the failed crops would have to contend with the rising prices and shortages. But with the food is now being shipped around the globe, one failure could be apocalyptic, and experts are trying to warn us. Weather and the cyclic nature of the earth, combined with government regulations and war, could make producing viable crops in quantities that will feed humanity difficult in the next several years, especially when considering the increasing human population.

Less than one-quarter of Earth’s total cropland produces nearly three-quarters of the staple crops that feed the world’s population.  These staples include corn, wheat, and rice, and are the most important cereal crops. The areas which grow these crops are our planet’s major breadbaskets. But experts warn that simultaneous crop failures could impact our very near future making global famine a reality. When compounded with the effects of war and the ever-increasing government regulations on agriculture across the globe, food production will continue to face even more difficulty in the coming years.

Pardee Center postdoctoral scholar John Patrick Connors and Anthony Janetos with the Conversation and Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and Professor of Earth and Environment, have been using some mathematical models to study the potential environmental and economic impacts of failures in multiple breadbaskets around the world. They limit their study to only “climate change” however, placing no blame on government beasts who actually bloody their own hands when they hamper food production. But these experts do want the government to “help” should this tragedy occur.

The Pardee Center has published a research agenda that discusses what we still need to know about these risks.  Key questions include understanding the full distribution of risks, whether increased international trade can ameliorate risk and where the most responsive and the most sensitive regions are. Ultimately, understanding and preparing for multiple breadbasket failures will require input from climate scientists, agronomists, ecologists, remote sensing experts, economists, political scientists, and decision-makers. –DailyMail UK

The good news, according to Janetos, is that not all regions respond in the same way to shocks in other places in the world. Some could bring new land into production quickly, easing stresses caused by crop failures elsewhere. But in order to make global food systems more robust, we need to know more about the most damaging consequences of multiple breadbasket failures, because in the past, when the world’s breadbaskets suffered shortages, the cost of food increased greatly.

For example, regional droughts and heat waves in the Ukraine and Russia in 2007 and then again in 2010 damaged wheat crops and caused global wheat prices to spike by substantial amounts in both years. In 2012, heat and drought in the United States slashed national corn, soybean, and other crop yields by up to 27 percent.

But this is all fairly minor compared what a global catastrophe of failed crops could look like. The combined effects of government and war with the natural cycles of Earth could quickly cause a famine. Many experts assert that world food production will have to double by 2050 to feed the earth’s growing population and satisfy rising demand for meat, poultry, and dairy products in developing countries. But the environmentalists seek to strike a balance between the destruction of forests and food production. So experts actually suggest using crops such as Monsanto’s DroughtGuard hybrid corn to prevent crops from failing when there is a lack of water.

Unfortunately, with earth’s population increasing exponentially, there may be no other way to feed the masses than with genetically modified food.

Leaving out the impact of government on food production lessens the blow somewhat. But it’s important to remember that often the hands of those who produce our food are often tied thanks to laws and regulations. Getting around this won’t be easy either.  Perhaps it’s time to focus on growing your own food in preparation for the unthinkable.

The Monster Fascist Corporation Monsanto and their Frankenstein GMO’s are doing their best to destroy the entire food chain. 75% of the crap on the Store Shelves labeled as food today, is not really food at all, just some chemical concoction made to look like food. Just go cruise the potato chip, soda and candy isle and read the ingredients description on the labels. And which are the 3 Main food category staples, most chosen by the Food Stamp/ EBT’ers.

        • janie says:

You’re right. And this article mentioning that Montsanto might be the answer…..their crops are not increasing production. Just increasing their bottom line.

      • durangokidd says:

The day will come in AMERICA when food will be rationed, by necessity. That day is years away but it IS coming. Keep stacking and packing for you and yours. 🙂

I remember the days when famine was a worldwide phenomena. It still occurs in some regions of the world but it does not receive news coverage.

      • Wilson says:

“Leaving out the impact of government on food production lessens the blow somewhat”

Leave out the impact of government on food production” followed by the next sentence which says,

“But it’s important to remember that often the hands of those who produce our food are often tied thanks to laws and regulations, (i.e. THE GOVERNMENT)????? The paragraph is contradictory and makes no sense.

        • KY Mom says:

Seed diversity is important for our future food supply.
          Seed diversity has been decimated.

Over 93% of the world’s seeds have been lost in the past 80 years.

Weather (too hot or cold, rainy or little rain, etc.), insects and blights have always been challenges for farmers.

It is important to plant and save a variety of heirloom seeds. Seed Savers dot org has a variety of different seeds.

We doubled the size of our garden this year. Introduced twelve chickens. Berries are starting to grow. Grape Vines etc. Start somewhere. Produce something. Help yourself.

    5. Jonny V says:

Getting off the grid means more than just being non dependent on a failing electrical infrastructure….our power goes out multiple times per year and so I have work around (back up power). Same needs to apply to food. If you don’t want to eat pesticides, you need to buy organic, or grow your own.

At this point, the best idea is to get your family moved out of walking distance from major population centers. Small communities are full of like minded folks who aren’t likely to go along with the globalist GMO program, or the “homeless emergency” program, or the “road toll/gas tax” program, or the idiots spewing anti NRA nonsense program….you get the idea.

    6. CrackSumSkulls says:

Just ask the Central American Mayans about crop failures and European Invasions in the 1500’s. OOPS, hardly a Mayan soul left to ask, if you can actually find one.

Back in the late 1400’s, before Columbus’s Journey in 1492, there were approximately 18 Million Native Americans, in over 566 recognized known Tribes living in North America. In the year 1900 at the turn of the Century, there were only about 350,000 true Native Americans left in the USA.

Just some trivia, to put it all in perspective how quickly an entire culture can be decimated. US Census Bureau in 2010 claims there are 2.3 Million True Native Americans in the US including Native Alaskans, which is still less than 1% of the Total US population.

      • Wilson says:

Wow, I didn’t know there were census records that far back to support the “approximately 18 million native Americans” claim, let alone a method to recognize 566 “known” tribes. I’d like to see the map that shows where these tribes were. All “566” of them on a map for the same year. Basically, I’m calling BS on your claims.

The Census Bureau doesn’t claim any number of Native Americans today. The number comes from people self identifying as native Americans. There is Elizabeth Warren who claims to be native American. The tribe she claims to be a member has no records to establish her ancestry, nor has the tribe recognized her as a member. She is one of those 2.3 “true” you speak of. That raises the question, what is a “true” native American?

        • CrackSumSkulls says:

Wilson is a moron. All of these facts are well documented. Not sure where you got your education but it is minimal and shows. Yes go look up 2010 native Americans census moron. History is a tool for undetstanding. Go got ya sum. Re:Columbus, its refered to as Pre-Columbian time. Boy you people are freaking stupid.

      • Old Sailor says:

Columbus never set foot in N. America. Therefore, he had nothing to do with anything that happened to “Native Americans” in N. America.

    7. Jim in Va. says:

Stock up now…famine predicted in 2020 worldwide.

    8. GrandpaSpeaks says:

But don’t plant that garden in your front yard and no rooster for those hens in the back yard. Don’t plow your field the EPA says those furrows are mini mountain ranges. Don’t build those pipelines because the container ships bringing the food burn tons of fuel per hour. Don’t breast feed your babies because 100% of human milk has tested positive for glyphosate. Don’t breathe because your exhaled breath is a toxic gas. Don’t do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the signs?

    9. Crop failures could cause apocalyptic disasters? Who would have thunk it?

    10. Karl V. says:

“Eat recycled food… it’s good for the environment, and okay for you….”

      — public service announcement / ‘Total Recall’

    11. Nailbanger says:

This is why diversity in crops and plant systems is so important, ive learned this first hand.
This is also why GM crops are a bad plan, monocropping is just bad practice, lots of big farms do nothing but monocrop, but many many many big farms are finding out the benefits to conservation tillage and good solid rotations. Yields are solid, and inputs reduced in almost all cases, some perennial weeds are a problem in these systems but almost always can be traced to resistence to herbicide use from overuse of herbicides. The increases in beneficial insects and organizms in no till or strip tilled systems are off the charts vs conventional tillage in most cases because of the increased organic matter and improved soil structure.
In the short term GM crops may show a benefit to under developed countries but in the long term they do nothing but increase dependence, in reality it would be better for these countries to adopt better agricultural practice and also stop trying to grow commodity crops in areas that are not suitable for agricultural production. This will never happen though, most of these shithole countries are overpopulated and are under educated. Corruption plays a huge roll in this too.

Whether or not the above is an issue, the truth is that BIG GREEN MONEY faux global warming is a scam, and between 30 and 50 percent of all food produced globally, equivalent to two billion tons, is thrown away each year according to a recent report written by the UK-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME), titled ‘Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not’, found at http://www.imeche.org/Libraries/Reports/IMechE_Global_Food_Report.sflb.ashx

    14. Release says:

Even though he may or may not have said this, it should be considered as it may bear on this subject.

“Who controls the food supply controls the people; who controls the energy can control whole continents; who controls money can control the world.”

Weather planned or natural (this would make no difference), those who can control the food sources (and the stockpiles of) can and will control the masses.

Its always about control, one way or another.

    15. grandee says:

And as a famine begins to develop, Monsanto and friends will make you buy your seeds from them.

Total control. Even if you’ve saved your own seed, cross pollination could wipe out the heirlooms.

doomed if you do. doomed if you don’t.

      • SumItUp says:

Correct. Maybe those with Green Houses would fare better (until they came to prevent that)

        • Beaumont says:

I’m building one — x amount of feet away from the property line, constructed in the legal way — and it causes yelling from the nosy neighbor.

Whether you cut or grow hedges or pull weeds or don’t, there is no correct way to satisfy the petty sociopaths. Everything you do can be categorized as a crime or a danger to others.

They have threatened people with raids, over sweet corn, potato seeds, lemon trees, free range milk cows and whole grain bread.

          • SumItUp says:

You can be nestled in the middle of 5 to 5000 acres and there will always be someone, somewhere who will bitch at something that you will or are trying to do.
Just make sure to post the ‘No Trespassing-Lethal Force is Authorized’ signs at the appropriate places.

      • Archivist says:

You can stop cross-pollination on your seed plants. Just cover the flowers and hand pollinate.

    16. boyo says:

How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman ?

      None.

    17. Brian says:

Apocalyptic famines make ethanol production from crops very unpopular. The US and Brazil lead the world in ethanol use. Fracking has reduced oil prices and put the idea of increasing the ethanol content to 15% on hold. Famines would increase US dependence on fracking.

    18. What I am about to post is about as Politically Incorrect as it Gets; but, here goes.

Sterilize everyone with an IQ lower than 89. Yep 88 and you are not going to reproduce. It is the easiest way to prevent a future starvation.

We don’t need GMOs to feed the world.

Add criminal rapists and murders, as well as the chronically and severely mentally ill. If prisons allow conjugal visits, first sterilize them.

__ ok. I know this will flip out the sensitive fools. Let me know that you consider that the philosophy that led to the gas chambers. No, it really didn’t. Fleas and lice led to the gas chambers.

      __

    19. TEST says:

Technically, B, what you are referring to in Hitler’s Germany is called Aktion T4. Whatever the merits of what you argue are, the truth is it would lead to tyranny, and soon expand beyond what you propose. Dr. Peter Singer of Yale believes you should be able to bump off kids up to 2 yrs old

Finnish writer Pentti Linkola, an uber-greenie, who wants to reduce Earth’s population to 500 mm and abandon modern technology (presumably he is getting his message out via smoke signals). Writes Linkola: What to do, when a ship carrying a hundred passengers suddenly capsizes and there is only one lifeboat? When the lifeboat is full, those who hate life will try to load it with more people and sink the lot. Those who love and respect life will take the ship’s axe and sever the extra hands that cling to the sides.” This, of course, is ignorant horse manure. We have MINDS that can, and HAVE, created wealth, the green revolution, and even Mendel’s traditional plant breeding. Minds matter more than mouths. And of course, America is the core of the problem to Lincola: “The United States symbolises the worst ideologies in the world: growth and freedom.” Linkola concludes by writing: “Any dictatorship would be better than modern democracy. There cannot be so incompetent a dictator that he would show more stupidity than a majority of the people. The best dictatorship would be one where lots of heads would roll and where government would prevent any economical growth. We will have to learn from the history of revolutionary movements — the national socialists, the Finnish Stalinists, from the many stages of the Russian revolution, from the methods of the Red Brigades — and forget our narcissistic selves. A fundamental, devastating error is to set up a political system based on desire. Society and life have been organized on the basis of what an individual wants, not on what is good for him or her… Just as only one out of 100,000 has the talent to be an engineer or an acrobat, only a few are those truly capable of managing the matters of a nation or mankind as a whole. In this time and this part of the World we are headlessly hanging on democracy and the parliamentary system, even though these are the most mindless and desperate experiments of mankind. In democratic coutries the destruction of nature and sum of ecological disasters has accumulated most. Our only hope lies in strong central government and uncompromising control of the individual citizen.” Linkola has also publicly called for climate change deniers be “re-educated” in eco-gulags and that the vast majority of humans be killed with the rest enslaved and controlled by a green police state, with people forcibly sterilized, cars confiscated and travel restricted to members of the elite, while another Finnish environmentalist writer, Martin Kreiggeist, hails Linkola’s call for eco-gulags and oppression as “a solution,” calling for people to “take up the axes” in pursuit of killing off the third world. Kreiggeist wants fellow eco-fascists to “act on” Linkola’s call for mass murder in order to solve overpopulation.

I think, Bfrom CA, this is where your proposal would end up, long or short.

    20. squodgy says:

Nothing more than pro GMO & pro Monsatan fearmongering.

In UK, swathes of GMO monoculture i.e. Canola, & Maize replace what used to be mixed agricultural crops.

Hopefully farmers will awaken before our soil is permanently poisoned with weed killer chemicals like Glyphosate.

    21. Anna says:

“The cyclic nature of our the earth,” yes… Combined with human-caused climate change. The fact is, you don’t have to believe in climate change for it to be real, and for it to be a real driving force behind crop failure and widespread famine among many othe SHTF scenarios. I always find it sadly amusing that so many preppers refuse to acknowledge the fact of climate change. I’m not sure why, since they are the first to come up with all sorts of crazy potential scenarios that could end life as we know it. But what is right in front of us and clear as day is being brushed off as a conspiracy. Come on guys! You’re smarter than that! Open your eyes!!! Either way, it’s too late now. We’ve f#*%ed up our planet and all you can do at this point is hope for the best, do your part to reverse the damage done and prepare for the worst.
