Chinese Warships Draw the Line At Sea: “Barring U.S. Ships Through Territorial Waters”

Public Domain, DoD image of Chinese Luhu Class Destroyer, HARIBING on the first ever Chinese “visit” of a warship to U.S. naval station in San Diego, 1997

This article was written by Tyler Durden and originally published at Zero Hedge.

Editor’s Comment: If a trade war there will be, China is more than ready to make a stand. The military issue over the South China Sea and disputed territorial claims is coming to a head. Both sides have demonstrated their ICBM missiles, and their respective strength. Any incident there could lead to war, and if so, then a blockade against all the commercial products and food items that China exports to America each year. Short of war, China has been edging forward with its currency, valuing it to keep Chinese goods appealing, and deepening its place in the basket of world currencies that is set to displace U.S. sole advantage through the petrodollar. If President Trump puts up a tariff wall against Chinese imports, or more drastically implements sanctions for any reason, there could be a hostile trade war that leads to military action.

There are many scenarios, and greater tensions than ever before. The stage is being set, and all is not quiet in the Pacific. Stand by, and keep close watch over the reported interactions between warships both in the Asian sphere, and close to the shores of Iran. Meanwhile, Russian spy ships have been seen trolling U.S. waters. How crazy are things about to get?

China May Bar US Ships From Passing Through Its Waters

    by Tyler Durden

In a preemptive move to limit foreign naval presence in proximity to China and especially the disputed South and East China Sea islands, China’s People’s Daily reports the Beijing is set to revise its 1984 Maritime Traffic Safety Law, which would allow the relevant authorities to “bar some foreign” (read U.S.) ships from passing through Chinese territorial waters. The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council announced Tuesday it is soliciting public opinions on the revisions. Think of it as an Air Defense Identification Zone, only in the water.

According to the Chinese press, the draft would empower maritime authorities to prevent foreign ships from entering Chinese waters if it is decided that the ships may harm traffic safety and order.  The draft revisions would grant authorities the right to designate specific areas and temporarily bar foreign ships from passing through those areas according to their own assessment of maritime traffic safety. The revisions are based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and Chinese laws on the sea, adjacent areas and exclusive economic zones, the office said.

It was not clear how China would implement and enforce this bar, or what the punishment for transgressors would be.

Wang Xiaopeng, a maritime border expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the revisions will provide legal support for China to safeguard its maritime rights.

As a sovereign State and the biggest coastal State in, for example, the South China Sea, China is entitled to adjust its maritime laws as needed, which will also promote peace and stable development in the waters.”

Quoted by the Daily, Yang Cuibai, a professor with the School of Law at Sichuan University, agreed, saying that “the revisions will strengthen China’s management over territorial waters in a new era when the country’s communication and trade with foreign countries in the waters have sharply increased.” Yang added that China should take the lead to establish the legal order in the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea.

Additionally, the draft said that foreign submarines would travel on the surface, display national flags and report to Chinese maritime management administrations when they pass China’s water areas. They should also get approval from the relevant administrations to enter China’s internal waters and ports.

Foreign military ships that are approved to enter China’s waters should apply for pilotage. Foreign ships that enter Chinese waters without approval will be fined 300,000-500,000 yuan ($43,706-72,844) and those violating Chinese laws would be expelled, it said.

“China’s waters are open to foreign ships as long as they do not damage the waters’ safety, order, or China’s sovereignty,” Yang said.

The draft also states that people in distress at sea have the right to be rescued without charge, adding that human lives should come before the environment and assets.

The State Council and local governments should set up maritime search and rescue centers, if needed, to organize, coordinate and command rescue operations, the draft says. Civilian groups are also encouraged by the revised regulations to set up rescue teams and participate in such operations.

Aside from the contested islands, the waterway in question is one of the biggest focal points of global naval trade: should China implement a mandatory check of each and every naval vessel, it may have a chilling effect on global seaborne trade, which would come at a time when worldwide commerce is already declining and could be further impacted in coming months should Trump implement his protectionist trade agenda.

      HCKS.

Molon Labe, invade my city, fuck with us if your bad enough.

      • “And we will sink those ships.”

That would not be a smart move … do you even realize the consequences if such an action happened?

Don’t you see the Military Industrial Complex has been provoking and instigating anybody to challenge them?

Americas War Machine must thrive on – they care not who gets in their way. It’s all business to them, while the innocent die, and the dumb ass’s who volunteer to fight their damn phony wars are used as bait.

        • The Deplorable Braveheart says:

FTW, I agree we should never fire the first shot at anyone. But if someone else’s ship fires at you first, it is proper and right to shoot back in self-defense.

          • Smokey says:

No, sink them now and end the dispute. Without naval capability, the Chinese will have nothing to be belligerent about.

The Chinese will shoot first, they’re setting themselves up for it.

            • We (United States Government) has no business meddling around in the South China Sea. It other countries in that area concerned about it – then let them dispute and resolve these actions.

Kinda like the Middle East – we shouldn’t be there, but it’s business at the cost of other peoples lives.

There is absolutely no reason the U.S. Gov should be policing the world.

Other countries are tired of how we promote and spread are so-called democracy. There is not a damn thing peaceful about it – just sick and uncalled for business.

Honestly – I believe the world would be a more peaceful place, without our intrusion onto others.

                  Iraq? Libya?

Regarding The Military Industrial Complex here is an explanation. In effect its profiteering from war material and munitions. A transfer of wealth from the tax payer/public to the arms produces that has significant evidence of being unwarranted and unjustified. Its theorized with pretty good credibility that it was a great factor in the US coup on November 22nd 1963. Its been theorized that its behind the ostensible if not outright fragment excuses for war as can be seen with The Gulf Of Tonkin and to a lesser degree WMD in Iraq (that was most likely Oil Peg related).

                  Hope this helps

Its very patriotic to question your government and insist that they follow the Constitution and Bill Of Rights diligently. Actually its a duty of a Free Citizen that virtually all of the Founding Fathers said in one way or another.

                  • Kevin2 says:

No but its surely the motivator.

The US is just the enforcer, the Frank Nitti for global organized crime known by many names, NWO, Globalists, ect. They don’t steal the oil they require that it be sold in US dollars thus creating a false value for this currency. In the case of China they want that nation industrialized to exploit the cheap labor yet dependent upon imported oil and thus controllable. China having foreign occupiers for a great percentage of its modern history wants to be independent of outside influence.

Typical hubris. The Chinese have some good technologies. Especially missile technologies with anti ship supersonic capability (Mach 2 to Mach 4) that can be launched from the surface, sub and air. More importantly these missiles can be launched outside the range of defensive systems. They also have a lot of subs. China is not a big Iraq.

        • Anonymous says:

The world wants a World War and our nation is on the verge of a Civil War.

It’s the Democrats fault. Sounds good does it not.

    6. The Deplorable Braveheart says:

Those islands claimed by Red China and those other countries are located in INTERNATIONAL WATERS, NOT CHINESE TERRITORIAL WATERS. International law only recognizes a 12-mile limit on territorial waters from ANYONE’S coastline. An estimated $7,000,000,000 in trade flows through the South China Sea every year. The US and all other nations have every right under international law to sail in those waters. Those gooks in Beijing don’t tell us what the f#$% to do. And no, I’m not taking up for any stinkin’ neocons either!

      • Nuke em Duke says:

“Those Gooks” are THE only thing that has kept the STINKING US economy afloat for the past 20 years.
THEY OWN the USA in every conceivable form.
The ONLY card the USA has left to play is war, and they will play it.
The USA cannot even take down third world, fourth rate nations like Iraq and Afghanistan without completely phucking things up…….no way they can win against Chuna.
The war IS OVER……and China HAS WON……without a shot even being fired.
Then again, if Unky Sam wants to pull out the Nukes……well……that changes things.
But the USA (along with all western nations) will end up a zinging molten glass car park.
        Here’s the solution:
USA……get down on your Hunkers and ask the world for forgiveness for your in humane foreign policy over the past 30 years.
        Pay your debts……IN FULL.
Patriots……pick up your guns and run the NWO Show out of town once and for all.
Once those three steps are down, you will have NOTHING to fear from China or ANYONE else.
Peace……no offence to anyone here……respect you all.

      Sgt.

      • The Deplorable Braveheart says:

Sarge, I would also question the quality and performance of Chinese military hardware. Sure, they fire their guns and so forth in drills but none of their hardware has ever been tested in actual battle conditions. Don’t forget, it’s all MADE IN CHINA just like everything else.

        • Smokey says:

Not just the hardware, their naval personnel have never been tried, either. The last Chinese naval action was in 1895, when the Japanese sank their navy and took Korea from them. Before that, a squadron of British ships whipped them in 1840. They really have nothing that can be called a naval tradition.

We can all agree that the US naval personnel now at sea weren’t on Old Ironsides, Damning the Torpedoes, Firing when Ready Gridley, or at Leyte Gulf, Midway, Inchon, the Persian Gulf, or a hundred other such actions, but they’ll do their jobs because of it.

How about Chinese and Russian ships in the gulf of Mexico off the coast of Houston. How would we feel? Military Industrial Complex. Keep an eye on the propaganda. They’re trying to build consensus for war.

They don’t want war just the threat of it. Not any war as people in mud huts have a limited ability to be the excuse for 100 billion dollar weapons systems and the profits are too low in infantry weapons. They need a continuous cold war that simmers just shy of hot.

I wonder how the world would take it if America suddenly enforced Chinese style rules in the waters of all of Hawaii to the Pacific coast of CONUS? The area of Hawaiian waters is really big. The area I have in mind is from the end of the Aleutians, South, to South point of Hawaii and the due east to the CA/MEX boarder. Then add 200 miles to that border.
Would the world squawk about that?
If China gets away with their asinine assertions, so should we.

      • Rellik –

You are very much correct on your post.

As is, and I’m sure you know – that Hawaii was never legally made a State. Hawaii was illegally occupied due to the threat of Japan.

United States technically annexed Hawaii without the approval and legal procedures from the natives.

of war. War is historically a way of
nation building. If you don’t like it,
then win a war and force the people to do

It is easy to find the courage necessary to support a moral position if that position benefits oneself. True moral courage, however, is proven when one chooses to support that which is morally and ethically right even when such a position is to one’s one detriment.

The people of the United States find themselves in such a position right now, forced to choose between a moral and ethical position that carries with it the potential for “inconvenience”, or supporting the status quo and having to admit to themselves that they are not the champions of justice they imagine themselves to be. By the end of this article, you will know for yourself which one you are.

Most folks have heard that Hawaii is a state, one of the United States of America. Most people, including those who live in Hawaii, accept that statement as a fact.

But the reality is that in a world in which nations are as bound by the rule of laws as are the citizens of nations (if not more so), the truth is quite different!

The truth is that each and every step along Hawaii’s path from sovereign and independent nation, to annexed territory, to state, was done in violation of laws and treaties then in effect, without regard to the wishes of the Hawaiian people. Many people, including President Grover Cleveland, opposed the annexation of Hawaii.

But in the end, simple greed and military interest overrode any concerns of moral right and legality. Hawaii’s legitimate government was toppled using threat of American military force. Hawaii was stolen from her people for the benefit of wealthy American plantation owners and military interests, and the justifications for the crime were invented after-the-fact.

Hawaii’s government was overthrown on Jan. 17, 1893, by a relatively small group of men, most of them American by birth or heritage, who seized control of the Islands with the backing of American troops sent ashore from a warship in Honolulu Harbor. To this “superior force of the United States of America,” Queen Lili`uokalani yielded her throne, under protest, in order to avoid bloodshed, trusting that the United States government would right the wrong that had been done to her and the Hawaiian people.

Who were this group of American men and why did they overthrow the government?

            Sugar!

ALL WAR is for one thing and that is POWER to control and then the MONEY it creates from that! control is a mental defect and creates MORE DEAD people than any other thing in history! IF these mentally defective people were removed from power, the war would stop, what do think is behind ISLAM and some other religions?? control of the people!! think about it, money is the secondary evil of the world, CONTROL of the people is the primary! and BEFORE you say it, I did NOT say all religions.just some which are really cults and NOT religion.

        • Smokey says:

Gee, I guess we should have let the Japanese occupy Hawaii back in 1895, then, that would certainly be so much more acceptable, especially to the natives, than annexing the Islands ourselves.

    18. I spent 9 years in the military and another 23 years with the DOD. With all the attitudes being that we should not get involved outside of the USA and the defunding of our military, I see this country eventually being hit hard. We have cut back on ships, closed bases and slowly stripped our military of funds. We have some of the best soldiers in the world and they will do what ever it takes to keep us safe, but society today seems to be totally against them. I look at a lot of the comments here and just shake my head. Some people seem to think if we completely disarm, then so will everyone else. Well, it aint gona happen. They are just looking for a sign of weakness. No body wants war, but it is a grim reality of keeping us and the world safe. If we just sit back a watch, Russia and China will slowly over power every small country between them and us and we will wake up with them at our doors.

        JAS,
you are correct, but there are allot of us who believe we need a good strong military , just not controlled by political wants and desires, MOST of the people in the USA that are against more military are imigrants and should NOT be here anyway, also there are some brainwashed LIBTARDS that have askewed thinking. BUT for the most part a weak military is just another way to push the destruction of this country!
stay safe and ready as it probably will come down to some of us trying to save what is left of this country and helping to rebuild a GOOD solid country back again!

Rejecting selected China imports to America may make for exploding tempers over there. (That’s better than exploding shells here)

    20. Buffalolips says:

Let’s not make too much of this bluster. The solution is so simple. If China bars US ships from the South China Sea, we bar Chinese ships from US Territorial waters. The result, no Chinese merchant ships reach port in the United States. China would cave in less than one second. Even if China didn’t immediately cave, do you really care about WalMart and Chinese crap products? Really? Bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States. It would be great to be able to buy a simple kitchen appliance that wasn’t made in China.

    21. Bigbluedrew says:

.TOUGH sledding here. China holds a huge amount of our debt, they also import an enormous amount of goods and materials into our country. They COULD engage in economic warfare and crash our economy. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn’t paying attention, it would hurt them but not nearly as badly as a shooting war with us would. America is vunerable on many fronts, too many to mange IMO. Our fractured society and crumbling political system makes us weak and indecisive, theirs and Russia’s BEST move would be to wait and let the rot we have intensify. My biggest fear is that at some point soon our generals will make the same assessment and decide a conflict now rather than latter is our only logical recourse. If so it’s Mad Max time for the world. Hope I’m wrong got a grand daughter due this summer, really hope she has a chance at a becent life, I wouldn’t bet on it though.

Bigbluedrew…..that was a really good post.
        Well said.
A suggestion for your newborn grand daughters name:
        “Apology”
For that is what America owes this entire planet, and is the ONLY THING that will save any of us.
        Peace.
