A Massive Electromagnetic Pulse Could Collapse The Economy In A Single Moment

What would you do if all the lights went out and they never came back on?  That is a question that the new NBC series “Revolution” asks, but most people have no idea that a similar thing could happen in real life at any moment.  A single gigantic electromagnetic pulse over the central United States could potentially fry most of the electronics from coast to coast if it was powerful enough.  This could occur in a couple of different ways.  If a powerful nuclear weapon was exploded at a high enough altitude, it could produce an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to knock out electronics all over the country.  Alternatively, a massive solar stormcould potentially cause a similar phenomenon to happen just about anywhere on the planet without much warning.  Of course not all EMP events are created equal.  An electromagnetic pulse can range from a minor inconvenience to a civilization-killing event.  It just depends on how powerful it is.  But in the worst case scenario, we could be facing a situation where our electrical grids have been fried, there is no heat for our homes, our computers don’t work, the Internet does not work, our cell phones do not work, there are no more banking records, nobody can use credit cards anymore, hospitals are unable to function, nobody can pump gas, and supermarkets cannot operate because there is no power and no refrigeration.  Basically, we would witness the complete and total collapse of the economy.  According to a government commission that looked into these things, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population would die from starvation, disease and societal chaos within one year of a massive EMP attack.  It would be a disaster unlike anything we have ever seen before in U.S. history.

Most Americans are totally clueless about what an EMP attack could do to this nation, but the threat is very real.  There was even a congressional commission that studied the potential effects of an EMP attack on the United States for eight years

The US Congress in 2000 established the Congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack. In 2004, the committee produced a 70-page executive summary on the EMP threat, and it issued a final report on the matter in 2008. According to the report, “several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication.”

Dr. William Graham was the chairman of that commission, and he says that an EMP attack could knock the United States back into the 1800s in just a single moment

An EMP attack “could not only take down power grids, which are fragile anyway in this country, and telecommunications networks, and financial networks, and traffic controls and many other things, but in addition, there is a very close interrelationship among those national infrastructure capabilities,” Graham says.

“So, for example, we need telecommunications to re-establish the power network, and we need the power network to keep telecommunications going for more than a few hours. And we need the financial network to continue to operate to maintain the economy, we need the transportation system, roads, street lights, control systems, to operate just to get people to the failed power, telecommunication and other systems,” he adds.

Life after an EMP attack “would probably be something that you might imagine life to be like around the late 1800s but with several times the population we had in those days, and without the ability of the country to support and sustain all those people,” Graham says. “They wouldn’t have power. Food supplies would be greatly taken out by the lack of transportation, telecommunication, power for refrigeration and so on.”

Unfortunately, very few of us are equipped to survive in such an environment.  We have become incredibly dependent on technology, and most Americans would have no idea how to do something as simple as growing their own food.  Most people would be in a very serious amount of trouble in a very short period of time.

An article by Mac Slavo detailed some of the things that we could expect in the aftermath of a massive electromagnetic pulse…

The first 24 – 48 hours after such an occurrence will lead to confusion among the general population as traditional news acquisition sources like television, radio and cell phone networks will be non-functional.

Within a matter of days, once people realize the power might not be coming back on and grocery store shelves start emptying, the entire system will begin to delve into chaos.

Within 30 days a mass die off will have begun as food supplies dwindle, looters and gangs turn to violent extremes, medicine can’t be restocked and water pump stations fail.

Are you prepared for such an event?

    If not, why not?

And actually, high altitude nuclear explosions and solar storms are not the only things that could produce sizable EMP bursts.

For example, the U.S. military has developed “a directed electromagnetic pulse gun” that can take out all electronics within a limited area.  This kind of weapon can be fired from a plane, a cruise missile or even a drone.  The following is from a recent WND article

A pre-programmed cruise missile not too different from a drone has been proven to be capable of blasting out an EMP-type microwave that was able to destroy personal computers and electrical systems inside a building over which it was flying.

The U.S. Air Force and its contractor Boeing have created the High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP, which was just tested over a Utah desert.

Other nations such as Russia and China are busy developing similar weapons.  The ability to instantly take out the electronics of the enemy would be a very powerful advantage.

Even North Korea has been working on this kind of technology.  According to Newsmax, it is believed that they may have tested a “Super-EMP” weapon back in 2009

North Korea’s last round of tests, conducted in May 2009, appear to have included a “super-EMP” weapon, capable of emitting enough gamma rays to disable the electric power grid across most of the lower 48 states

As this technology becomes more widespread, it will soon be accessible to just about everyone.  You don’t actually need a nuclear weapon to set off a massive electromagnetic pulse.  A non-nuclear pulse generator can do the same thing.  If you set one off next to a power station you could potentially take out the electrical grid for an entire region.

Terrorist groups and lone wolf crazies could even use portable radio frequency weapons to do a tremendous amount of electromagnetic damage over a more limited area.  The following is from a recent articleby F. Michael Maloof

Such an individual with a penchant for electronics can pull together components from a Radio Shack or electronic store – even order the components off of selected Internet websites – and fashion a radio frequency, or RF, weapon.

As microprocessors become smaller but more sophisticated, they are even more susceptible to an RF pulse. The high power microwave from an RF weapon produces a short, very high power pulse, said to be billions of watts in a nanosecond, or billionths of a second.

This so-called burst of electromagnetic waves in the gigahertz microwave frequency band can melt electrical circuitry and damage integrated circuits, causing them to fail.

Constructing a radio frequency weapon is not that difficult.  In fact, you can find instructions for how to build them on the Internet.

People need to realize that we live in a world where technology is absolutely exploding and we are dealing with threats that previous generations never even dreamed of.  As the world becomes increasingly unstable, it is inevitable that these kinds of weapons will be used.

It is only a matter of time.

What will life look like after an EMP weapon is used?

That is something to think about.

And we also need to keep watching the sun.  It could produce a massive electromagnetic pulse at literally any moment.  As I have written aboutpreviously, scientists tell us that it is only a matter of time before we are hit with a technology-crippling solar super storm.

Most people don’t even realize that the massive solar storm of 1859fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.  If such a storm hit us today, the damage would potentially be in the trillions of dollars.  The following is from a recent New York Times article

A powerful solar (or “geomagnetic”) storm has the potential to simultaneously damage multiple transformers in the electricity grid and perhaps even bring down large sections of it, affecting upwards of a hundred million people in the United States for many months, if not years.

These huge transformers are expensive and difficult to replace, and not many are stockpiled in the United States for an emergency. In the worst case, the impact would be devastating: An outage could cost a few trillion dollars, with full recovery taking years. Not only would parts of the grid be compromised, but telephone networks, undersea cables, satellites and railroads also would be affected.

2008 National Academy of Sciences studywarned that “because of the interconnectedness of critical infrastructures in modern society,” the “collateral effects of a longer-term outage” would likely include “disruption of the transportation, communication, banking and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration.”

By the way, 2013 is the peak of the current solar cycle.  So we are moving into a time period when conditions will be very favorable for solar storms.

Let us hope that we are never hit with a massive electromagnetic pulse that is strong enough to take out all of our electronics.

But if it did happen, and all the lights went out for good, what would you do?

If the Dems can shove this fiscal bill though. Istarting to think they might have a chance with guns. Did you see the numbers. I just couldn’t beleive it. Am I missing something. What happen behind the doors. I hope something is up. Or everything is not as I beleived it was.

I going to go build something and blow it up for fun.

        • Capben says:

The likelyhood of a event like this is very small. Damage would be sparadic and minimal.at best. I like these sites and they can be quite informative but id really like to see some topics that are real and credible. Try to focus on something like the REAL economic problems that we have and what we can do about them. Not this fear mongering. There are many places to get that already.

          • Bayou Bob says:

It’s true the Federal Reserve has run amok. Did you know that some computer models show that the Bernanke can keep printing and Congress can keep spending for 20 more years before it explodes? Don’t underestimate the TPTB will to keep the game running as long as they possibly can.

On the other hand how do you know that the likelihood of an EMP event is very small? What is “very small”? The last significant natural occurrence was in 1859.

And analysis shows it wasn’t likely one big flare but rapid succession of multiple flares that took the Earth’s shield down and then hit the earth.

Both scenarios have catastrophic outcomes. Neither has a predictable frequency.

Fortunately preparations for one are generally good for both. Minus of course the electrical and electronic gear stored in Faraday cages. That’s the price of the insurance policy, except I only have to pay it once. I gladly pay it.

            • Capben says:

Im a Mathamatician and physisist specializing in Quantum magnatisim. I studied this subject for 10 years. It would take a gigaton weapon detonated in space to do the type of damage that these senerios entail. Naturally occuring waves such as from sun spots are a different animal all together.
a 100 Mton weapon would put a 1 gauss charge on a square inch of land mass directly under the blast. It would fall off rapidly too less than 1/10 of that by the time it reaches the coasts.
To put that in perspective your refrigerator is generating a field in the 1000′s of gauss. You dont see your electronics frying from that do you??
The danger of the EMP is that it a vector quantity pulse that is directly porportional to the applied force. however, it is only One pulse. one sinewave. It will build charge and collect it in certain places. Those places will receive damage. But more than likely those places are grounded and the charge will go to earth and cause no damage. There will be damage, but not at the level that people wory about.

              • Bayou Bob says:

Can you provide some links to documentation? Not that I doubt you, I simply want to review and reference myself.

But it isn’t what I would expect considering the effects in Hawaii when Project Starfish was ignited 900 miles away @ ~1.4 MT.

And I still can’t be certain about the potential effects of a natural occurrence originating from the sun.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to prep for, beyond what I would spend anyway, so I don’t regret having a few garbage can Faraday cages stuffed with spare electrical/electronic gear.

              • extexanwannabe says:

Forgive me for doubting your credibility, as you misspelled three words in the first line, and used improper punctuation.

              • Capben says:

Show me a Mathematician who can spell. I sure cant. :D It is not my strength. Mine is Math. Now show me a English teacher who can do intragals? It is just the way it is.
If you really want to know the truth, bone up on your calculus and do it yourself. Maxwell’s equations are where it’s at. It’s not hard, it just looks complicated.
But think of it this way. Im sure you know what a microwave oven is. For a microwave oven to work it requires a device called a waveguide to focus the energy in a certain spot. Without the wave guide the energy just goes off in all directions equally and nothing is cooked.
The emp is like the microwave oven without the waveguide. There is nothing to focus the pulse and build energy. Thats why you get the 1 gauss charge equally across the area of influence. You dont have spots of 10,000 gauss because there is nothing to focus it until it hits the planet. Then local objects that have electrostatic tendencies will build coulombs and perhaps fry something. But almost everything made these days either has a transformer in it or is grounded or both.
Your car is a maelstrom of EM radiation. You can track a car from the moon if you wanted to. Yet it continues to run day in and day your within a highly concentrated EM environment.
Solar events are an entirely different animal as I said. The earths field is a dc field that produces about 1/2 gauss at the surface. The earths field keeps out EM that would turn you into a piece of toast if it wasent there. It is possible that a EM pulse from the sun could cause a lot of damage but a strong enough pulse to cancel the EM field of the earth will also cancel the current that operates us. Everyone exposed to it would just drop dead. Shut off like a machine.

              • Bayou Bob says:

Without references to published information supporting your claims I will continue to rely on the nerds at Sandia National Laboratories and their views on the potential for EMP-caused current insults.

Sorry but the Internet opinion of an anonymous mathematician and physisist specializing in Quantum magnetism, who can’t spell or site published references, just doesn’t cut it as a source of reliable information. :o)

                Have a Happy New Year!

PS: I don’t recall that anyone died when the solar flares in 1859 insulted the telegraph system.

              • Capben says:

I dont expect you to believe me Bob. That is why I suggest that you do the math yourself.
Telegraph had problems because they used long copper uninsulated wires which make quite effective wave guides. Dosent mean the earths magnetic field collapsed.
It does tend to reverse polarity from time to time but not since people have taken notice of it.
In the 1800′s telegraph wires were made of copper. Copper is highly impermeableble so it conducts EM flux quite well. That is why it is used in transformers. Hence the overloaded coils in the telegraph system. Today high tension wires are made of steel wires with a aluminum coating. A highly permeable combination here so the wires will just absorb the flux and get hot. They wont create any current or voltage. Nothing more.

              • Bayou Bob says:

Perhaps I’m an English major and not a mathematician.

              • Anonymous says:

If I was a puppet president and not a magic math man
I’d just turn the power off and everything else. I’d be aware
that the major part of the population wouldn’t
understand what happened. I’d then come in and disarm
the people and that would be a rap. You can
crunch the numbers on gods laws of science and
I’ll be preparing. You know it wouldn’t hurt to
be as self sufficient as possible that’s how the
People use to do it. Good luck to you all!

        • Just be sure to show your experiment (fail, no fail), to the next generation.

I first read “Lights Out” and thought it was a bit unrealistic because “Karate Man” was a bit too larger than life and everything seemed to work out too conveniently.

Then I read “One Second After.” Made me cry when he had to shoot his beloved dog to feed his daughter. Also a bit depressing because 80% of the people in the small town he was a part of didn’t make it when help finally arrived a year later (mostly from starvation).

I had to re-read “Lights Out” to get my spirits back up!

When an EMP (or other TEOTWAWKI) happens, I want to live where “Karate Man” lives!

        • krispkritter says:

Another excellent author is Thomas Sherry who wrote the Deep Winter Trilogy. From a prepper standpoint he covers almost everything that Patriots does not, in that Patriots was heavy on guns and Deep Winter is very much into what items to have besides weapons. It also focuses primarily on the recovery of a society in the first two books until it moves into a large scale civil war in the third. His coverage of PM’s and monetary elements, geo-political theory, and details on rebuilding a local community are pretty thorough, and at times gets tedious, but it’s an excellent read. (Disc: Not associated with his work in any way)

      • Mama Bear says:

If you haven’t read this book, you need to read it NOW. It is one of the best prepping guides out there, and is very thought provoking, and also very well written.

And, since we are on the topic of literature, I finally got to see The Hobbit last night, and I have to tell you, I thought of a lot of the folks on this site as I watched it, with the signs of a growing evil slowly instilling itself across the landscape. Mac definitely gets to be Gandalf. Maybe OQ for Elron. I even have some of the motley band of fightin’ dwarves cast…and the ever-awesome Gollum, I think we all know who would play him since he TALKS IN ALL CAPS!!!!! MY PRECIOUS!!!! Sorry, my husband gets to be Strider.

Anyway, how sad is it that this is my first movie in, like, a year without the wee bairns, and I think of y’all.

One off topic question, from my husband…is it okay to store magazines loaded, or is it better to store them empty? The concern is wear and tear on something that may not be replaceable down the road. Thanks.

        • Eisenkreutz says:

Dont store them loaded. Youll wear the springs out. I store my sidearm next to a clip with 3 shots in it. No real wear will come to the springs from only a few cartridges. Most gunfights are finished in 1 or 2 shots anyway.

        • flying trunk monkey says:

          Flying Trunk Monkey Says

Yes and no you have to worry about spring memory if the spring is compressed for too long ( say two years or so ) it wont release all the way back and also becomes very weak also you store the Feed lips up not in a ammo can upside down it will bend the steel ones and eventually the plastic will crack ( years down the road ) lay them flat or on there backs
That being said Springs are some what cheap compared to
P mags at $15.00 to $60.00 each now
Pick up a lot of springs or do as i do and only store Cheap steel mags (AR type G I ) loaded My PMags stay empty
If all the craziness stops in a couple months start buying Steel Mags for ARs

        • Freedoms glory says:

It’s ok to store them for a year or less but from time to time take them out and unload the ammo, then pull the spring apart just to give the springs there resistance again, this is called easing the springs.
When a spring is under pressure for a long time loss if its resistants and will stop ammo or rounds from feeding properly, because he spring is no longer pushing the rounds up hard enuf so to fix this just ease the springs.

        • Glacialhills says:

          Mama Bear,

There are differing opinions on whether keeping a mag loaded long term damages the spring. I am of the opinion that as long as you only load them 3/4 the compression is not going to hurt anything but fully loaded and compressed all the way down for a long time it may.I can say that unloaded and fully uncompressed I would be almost 100% sure it would not be damaged. So maybe do half and half to be safe?

          • slingshot says:

Proper function of magazines depends on the quality of the metal. You get what you pay for. AK mags are the sturdiest I have ever seen with both bullet retainers (Ears) being very thick and the magazines wall can withstand heavy impact. Have had AK mags loaded full for two years with no spring weakness. AR’s and Mini-14 are thin walled and have lighter springs. Have had Mini-14 mags fully loaded over a year with no feed problems. Although different manufactures have slight dimensional differences that cause loose fits in mag well causing feed problems. Pistol mags are the most problematic due to large capacity mags with small springs. I use factory mags for my pistol protection and aftermarket mags to have fun.
Some mags do not have spring memory. Some with multiple compression and expansion decrease the reliance factor rapidly. Like with everything else these days, it’s the luck of the draw. I do not use plastic mags except for Ruger 10/22.

            • Mama Bear says:

Thank you, everyone, for all the advice. I will pass it on to my husband. They are Ruger magazines, so hopefully they are of higher quality and will last. I really appreciate having a good group of folks to come to with my questions.

        • Zoltanne says:

Haven’t seen the movie but by the book, I’d have to say our Piper is a shoe-in for Gandalf.

And it’s whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

          :-)

        • I store the bulk of my mags empty. Those I keep loaded are in the pouches of my SOC belt and vests. If the mag’s capacity is 20, I load 19. I rotate these mags out every three months or so. You should get extra springs and followers (anti-tilt) for your mags to keep on hand. Wolff Springs are the best. You’ll find them at Midway USA, Brownells, etc. Get some extra springs for pistol mags as well. It would however probably take a couple of years of being compressed for your mag springs to take a “set”

        • RWS III says:

          Mama bear,
Magazine springs are worn out from compression and decompression in use. I.E. loading and emptying. Not from continuous compression.

I have two mags I keep unloaded for dry drills, all the rest are loaded and divided into groups.
I have marked mags for range use, these mags are the ones that get used and abused. I also have (well being that I’m a mag whore) another 30 or so kept loaded ready to go. The vast majority of my remaining black rifle ammo is on stripper clips stored in ammo cans to quickly recharge the mags.
Same goes for my side arm mags, they are kept loaded.

I also have a dozen pmags on back order, when they finally arrive, they will get loaded, an empty mag does no good.

The myth that storing mags loaded like so many other myths just won’t die.
I work in the metal industry, steel does not weaken in a static position, whether its under tension or not. what weakens steel is when it reaches its elastic limit.
All designers of well-made magazines make sure the spring never approaches the elastic limit when the magazine is fully loaded. Honest. This means the spring will not weaken when the magazine is fully loaded — not even over an extended time. Like 50 years. American Handgunner ran a story about a magazine full of .45 ACP that had been sitting since WWII and it ran just fine on the first try.

        • HisArmsWide says:

I can offer you anecdotal evidence going on 25 years. Note I’m not a metallurgist or mechanical engineer and don’t claim to be. But personal observation I can provide that in 1987 I purchased a just released Ruger P85 9mm pistol. Since that time it’s had perhaps 2000 rounds through the two magazines it came with. In all honesty it comes out of the safe once a year to shoot the duty rounds I keep them loaded with and to verify that everything’s running well and to get a new cleaning.

For the most part of that 25 years it sat in night stands, pistol vaults and safes and once a year the duty ammo is shot up and the current magazine is then swapped out for the other one with fresh ammo. Each time the magazine was fully loaded then the top round was chambered. So each magazine has been loaded 12+ years out of the last 25. Both magazines continue to work perfectly.

I’ve seen conflicting stories on keeping them loaded although a lot of folks who’s opinion I respect say with modern quality magazines that it’s the act of loading and unloading that causes the most wear.

          • HisArmsWide says:

Just to add to my own post, my current EDC Glock 19 has had about 5,000 rounds through it for training purposes the last year using just two magazines. (I keep another ‘few’ magazines set aside after checking for function that never get used). No problems have shown up. Anecdotal a friend of mine has close, his estimate, 20,000 rounds through a G2 Glock 17 over many years and hasn’t replaced any parts. One magazine has started to fail to lock the slide open in the last year so he swapped one of his unused ones out for it. It still feeds 100%.

When doors are shut, must all be conected, not that hard to figure out, any jack of all trades could do it. Hammer thick copper rod into ground in each corner of garage. Thats ur ground, wire to fencing. If ur car is parked in garage, should not be affected by EMP hopefully. When doors are closed, should be completely enclosed by fencing NO GAPS ANYWHERE! The floor should not be a problem.

If such an EMP took place, people would bash in each others skulls and eat each other’s meaty parts to survive after the food and gasoline supplies run out.
This is a chilling scenario to contemplate and write about. These are the real questions the world of today needs to ponder.

      • Be informed says:

2013 is 154 years after 1859, which is the 14th. such 11 year cycles. What I would like to know is just how long would such an EMP would typically last on the sun side. As the rotation of the planet goes, could such an EMP last long enough to catch some or all of the dark areas that rotate into the CME. If you are in the dark area when it happened you could have some advanced warning and try to safeguard what you could before the EMP reached you. I also wonder about a second or third EMP after the first one.

“This is not something I don’t know much about”, this would be what Just One Guy knows a lot about and could better explain about how long do these suckers last; seconds, minutes, hours. You would think there might be some warning before it happened on the sun. A manmade EMP I would worry far less about in comparison to what the sun can do.

      • Live free or die says:

Of course this scenario is real and not the stuff of imagination any more. How to prepare for hell on earth, I don’t know if we have the stomach to. I suppose it would take a very strong willed person to be able to survive such a cataclysmic event and stay sane, let alone care for their loved ones. Not sure I would want to in all honesty. People dyeing everywhere, my kids whitnessing this, my farm animals without food, who wants to survive such horror. If something this unthinkable should happen then I just pray the good lord shows those who believe in him and have lived a good life, the way to redemption and spares the children from the agony of it all.

        • PuffyPete says:

It would suck and may not be worth living but this is how we cleanse the planet. One cannot completely prepare for an event of that magnitude. Find Like minded people now and band together. On a side note…..back over 30 years ago, I had a friend who had been in the Navy and served in the S. China Sea off the coast of Vietnam during the war. He was a radio operator. He related a story to me about one time when the ship he was on had a cargo container set up on the deck. This thing had all kinds of antennae poking out of it and was under 24 hour guard by several Marines. He had befriended one of the sailors working in the cargo container and asked him one day what it was all about. The guy said, “I can’t tell you.”..but he pointed to a Russian ‘fishing trawler’ that was some distance from their ship and told my friend, “Watch that fishing boat.” He then went into the cargo container, and after a couple of minutes, my friend saw smoke pouring out of the bridge of the Russian ship. I don’t know….but that sounds like a directed EMP to me.

Be interesting to watch a state try the confiscation route. Maybe it will wake up the rest of the country to the road that we are going down (not that the media would report anything…). Definitely something in the water in Illinois. Over 500 murders in Chicago alone and they still think disarming law abiding citizens is the way to go.

Those in history that have dared say “it will never happen” have met the worst of fates.

We have no liberty if at every turn we are forced to monitor our government, petition, oppose, and lobby in hope of protecting that liberty from their repeated threats. A free man cannot be at the mercy of his government. They should be at the mercy of the people and live in fear of even suggestion of law such as this.

    10. I think that if you are prepped for an EMP, you are prepped for most scenarios. This is the big kahuna of disasters that I based my own preparations on.

If you can stay warm, fed, healthy and safe through this, you can consider yourself well prepared.

And we may not need an EMP event to face this – I could see much of society going without electricity just because of lack of affordability one day in the not so distant future.

      • Kevin says:

        HI Daisy :)

There is NO “prepped” for an emp!!! No electricity, all the nuclear reactors go fukushima!

        • Be informed says:

@ Kevin. I seem to be asking the questions tonight. Aren’t some of the nuclear reactors guarded against EMP? Could at least some of the nuclear reactors be shut down before going critical? If not, we are f’ed as there are hundreds of nuke plants around the world, especially all are near a large water source for the cooling process.

The Sun gives life everything, and can dramatically take away that life in a sudden (belch) flash.

          • Kevin says:

BI- “The Sun gives life everything, and can dramatically take away that life in a sudden (belch) flash”.

            That says it all brother!!

I dont know, maybe some of the plants are “guarded” against EMP effects, but the grid is not!!

I hear most plants have a weeks worth of diesel for there gens.

Once I posted the temperature rise of the cooling pools.
(on a shtfplan post) I forget what the time frame was, probably in 2 weeks after emp is when we would be in deep dodo.

Good to see you are still around BI!!

            Keep keeping us “informed” brother

        • Walt Kowalski says:

I think you’re probably pretty much on the mark there Kevin. I don’t know that there’s a place in the world that would escape the effects of all the nuclear reactors melting down. That just might be a slate wiper.

(Again…..one reason why the ‘elites’ are preparing underground bunkers and stocking up on freeze-dried food)

          • Southpaw says:

I’m going to try to find a good prepper group when I get settled in. Let me know if you have any good resources.

As far as the bunkers go, maybe we’ll meet some day and get a plan together for them.

Nope. If we have an EMP as described in the article above…or another “Carrington Event”…about the best I’ll be able to do is defend what I’ve got from the zombies for as long as I can and then bend over and kiss my backside goodbye……if radiation from a nuclear reactor about 100 miles from here doesn’t get me first.

      • Archivist says:

Square foot gardening works even on concrete. You can have raised beds of ornamental edible plants in the front yard and raised beds of traditional edible plants in the back yard. Buy plenty of heirloom seeds now, and if unprepared people die off, they won’t be needing their back yards anymore.

I believe a coronal mass ejection from the sun is a 100% probability. We just don’t know what day it will happen. There will be a few hours notice, because the solar flare visible light will get here first. The mass ejection part takes a few hours to get here. There is an Australian government site where you can get on a mailing list for solar flare notices. It is http://www.ips.gov.au/mailman/listinfo/ips-flare-alert.

I hear that if you lose weight, exercise, and eat right, you can eventually get off of some of the medicines. That’s what I’m working on this year. Hopefully my knees will last longer, too.

Solid, well-researched book written in an accessible voice and style for most readers. Definitely gives you something to think about in terms of preparing for such an EMP event.

Additionally, it goes without saying that William Forstchen’s ONE SECOND AFTER is the fiction book to read about an EMP.

I have no connection to the writer’s above or any financial interest in their sales—just recommending them for those of you who may not have any solid background texts relating to the EMP scenario.

I was recently reading about the Starfish Prime testing back in the 1960’s (1962?). The device used was a 1.4 megaton device if I am not mistaken. It caused damage to electrical systems in Hawaii which was about 1000 miles away. Come to find out, Uranium type fission only devices are way more efficient at producing EMP pulses than the larger fusion devices. One 10 kiloton pure Fission devices can produce an EMP that is 40 percent of the 1.44 megaton Starfish Prime device. It would appear that two or three 10 kiloton devices would be equivalent to one B-83 (1.2 megaton device which is a part of the U.S. active arsenal) . Here is the source:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse

This should be interesting reading in regard to the size, type and number of devices needed to produce an effective EMP attack (in particular, the section on weapon yield).
So the point is 1960’s high technology is not need for an EMP attack. 1940’s high technology will work just fine.

“Societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable. 1. Without government, as among our Indians. 2. Under governments wherein the will of every one has a just influence, as is the case in England in a slight degree, and in our states in a great one. 3. Under governments of force: as is the case in all other monarchies and in most of the other republics. To have an idea of the curse of existence under these last, they must be seen. It is a government of wolves over sheep. It is a problem, not clear in my mind, that the 1st. condition is not the best. But I believe it to be inconsistent with any great degree of population. The second state has a great deal of good in it. The mass of mankind under that enjoys a precious degree of liberty and happiness. It has it’s evils too: the principal of which is the turbulence to which it is subject. But weigh this against the oppressions of monarchy, and it becomes nothing. Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem. Even this evil is productive of good. It prevents the degeneracy of government, and nourishes a general attention to the public affairs. I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.[1] Unsuccesful rebellions indeed generally establish the incroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions, as not to discourage them too much. It is a medecine necessary for the sound health of government.” – Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, Paris, January 30, 1787[2]

1816 April 24. (to Dupont de Nemours) “Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day . . . . I believe it [human condition] susceptible of much improvement, and most of all, in matters of government and religion; and that the diffusion of knowledge among the people is to be the instrument by which it is effected.”[8]

1818 January 14. (to Joseph C. Cabell) “Now let us see what the present primary schools cost us, on the supposition that all the children of 10. 11. & 12. years old are, as they ought to be, at school: and, if they are not, so much the work is the system; for they will be untaught, and their ignorance & vices will, in future life cost us much dearer in their consequences, than it would have done, in their correction, by a good education.”[9]

1818 January 14. (to Joseph C. Cabell) “A system of general instruction, which shall reach every description of our citizens from the richest to the poorest, as it was the earliest, so will it be the latest, of all the public concerns in which I shall permit myself to take an interest.”[10]

1818 August 4. “The objects of this primary eduction [university education] determine its character and limits. These objects are To give to every citizen the information he needs for the transaction of his own business; To enable him to calculate for himself, and to express and preserve his ideas, his contracts and accounts, in writing; To improve by reading, his morals and faculties; To understand his duties to his neighbors and country, and to discharge with competence the functions confided to him by either; To know his rights; to exercise with order and justice those he retains; to choose with discretion the fiduciary of those he delegates; and to notice their conduct with diligence, with candor and judgement; And, in general, to observe with intelligence and faithfulness all the social relations under which he shall be placed. To instruct the mass of our citizens in these, their rights, interests and duties, as men and citizens, being then the objects of education in the primary schools, whether privet or public, in them should be taught reading, writing and numerical arithmetic, the elements of mensuration…and the outlines of geography and history.”[11]

1820 September 28. (to William C. Jarvis) “I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society, but the people themselves: and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their controul with a wholsome discretion, the remedy is, not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. this is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.”[12]

1822 October 21. (to C.C. Blatchly) “I look to the diffusion of light and education as the resource to be relied on for ameliorating the condition, promoting the virtue, and advancing the happiness of man.”[13]

1824 March 27. (to Edward Everett) “The qualifications for self-government in society are not innate. They are the result of habit and long training.”[14]

Pete, I read ONE SECOND AFTER back in October and was very emotional over it; especially when the guy’s daughter died, but I’ll agree it’s a plausible scenario. I’ll try to find a copy of the other book you mentioned. Daisy, we’re going to lose the grid either to an EMP, solar flare, or even hackers. It won’t matter how much money people have for the electric bill. It’s what will happen in the first few days of post-grid failure that we all need to be concerned with. That’s when TSHTF for real. Within the first 30 days, “The Great Culling” will begin. People will begin dying left and right from violence, starvation, disease, etc. If all the nuke plants in the US go Fukushima, it’s curtains for all of us. It will be a holocaust that will make other holocausts of the past pale in comparison. I dread it as much as everyone else here, but still preppin for it. Braveheart

There are some options for diabetics. People dependent on insulin can prolong their lives by going on a ketogenic diet- a very intense Atkins like diet. It might help them survive until supplies are available.
I have also seen information about camel milk containing insulin. Maybe a prepper with a farm could make use of that. It’s currently not legal to sell camel milk so this source isn’t very practical.
Some new insulins can survive a short time without refridgeration. This might be helpful too.

I posted this in another thread here, but it is worth repeating…alot of people still need to know…

Alot of comments on here. many good, some so-so… but at least people are talking… which in itself raises awareness-also good. This is a unique time in history, some of us will survive the upcoming horrors ahead and face a strange, new world. Many of us will face challenges and threats we never even thought of- or prepared for.

This is where you need to know your neighbor…are they with you? If not, they will sell you out, sad to say. If they are onboard, you are fortunate and ahead of the game. Compare plans, notes, tips and tricks now…while you still can. If you live within 200 miles of any U.S. coast…seriously consider moving far inland and far away from any nuclear plants if you can. Another poster here mentioned the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. and they are indeed a serious threat. All it takes is one EMP event, either man made or natural from our sun…and the crap hits the fan. How? Most (if not all) of the nuke plants in the U.S. have large on-site spent fuel pools…not to mention the reactor vessels themselves. These are deep, thick cement walled ‘pools’ that have ‘spent’ fuel rods in them which are actually still quite ‘hot’.

When the electricity stops, these pools are no longer cooled by recirc pumps. If an EMP event happens, there is no working electricity and no backup generators are going to work…they are toast. It only takes about 24-48 hours before they start to overheat and melt down. Fukashima is nothing compared to what we will experience here. Do your own research… but you will find that this is true. I only hope that the survivors of this uncertain future remember enough history so as not to repeat any of this crap next time….it’s really getting old.

            • Archivist says:

You are wrong about being safe in the shadows of a mountain. If an EMP from any source hits any long electrical transmission line, it induces current in it down its entire length, regardless of whether parts of the line are out of line of sight. And anything connected to the transmission lines, such as your TV, radio stations, anything at all, will be fried. In a Russian bomb test, induced currents even traveled through telephone lines.

Besides, if an EMP-producing bomb explodes several hundred miles up, a lot of territory is in line of sight. Tests have proven that a number of motor vehicles would be disabled, which would turn freeways into parking lots because of the multiple accidents. EMP will also fry sensitive electronics, such as cell phones, computers, and radios.

You should always keep backup devices stored in a Faraday cage or at least double-wrapped in plastic and aluminum foil. And don’t worry about electricity disappearing forever. As long as there are magnets and wire, you can make electricity.

              • Exactly right.
And if I was the enemy, I would make SURE, by overlapping as many devices as I had in inventory, just to make sure the Great Satan went down and wasn’t just merely hurtin’…
I would also launch them from tramp freighters, in the middle of the ocean, so the enemy didn’t have time to react.

      @Ted K now thats funny

EMP I dont suppose the Amish would even notice if one went off at all. Im trying to gear myself up so that I can TCB without electricity. Lets face it loss of electricity is a pretty likely occurance, EMP or not. I can think of many scenarios where electricity is gone. So what do we do? Back to the 1800s and all the work that goes along without the convenience of electricity or fossil fuels(yo car/tractor/truck is out of the game permenantly in an EMP). Time to think about and you all should be at least thinking about getting rural if your not allready, livestock (even if its 3 chickens in the back yard)gardens, horseback riding lessons, buy and learn to use hand tools. Maybe pick a hobby that could benefit you and yours in an EMP attack like blacksmith apprentice, pottery, help out a local farmer. Tons of things that you can do now to prep for this, perhaps turn off your own power for a few days and see what you miss the most then figure out how to deal with it. The thing I would miss the most would be hot showers, guess Im gonna need to rig up the wood stove somehow.

The collapse is ongoing and strong..it will continue until every last penny is extracted and taxed from us…

I would worry about the Sun infinately more than some half assed EMP attack by terrorists that don’t even close to have the capability to pull off an EMP attack. You need a nuke detonated at around 200 miles off the ground over a country to get power outages and grid failure. America, Russia, China, France, Great Britain, Israel, Pakistan, North Korea, and India are the only nuke powers I know of….it would have to be one of those countries pulling off an EMP attack. Pakistan or North korea would be my first 2 picks as to who might try that even though I doubt they would try it. It’s the sun you must fear people…..not an EMP attack by terrorists that simply don’t have a way to pull one off. I’ve said this here before and i’ll say it again…..don’t be shocked to see a solar flair from the sun hit and knock the power out…will be blammed on terrorists ( Iran ) and it’s off to bomb yet another country ( if the power comes back on I suppose )

Take a look at the Government’s on findings regarding an EMP and how well the nation would fare against one. http://www.empcommission.org/
Their findings conclude 90% of Americans would be dead in just the first year from violence, starvation, and medical issues. Scary stuff and no one seemed to care when the report came out in 2008.

    39. What will I do? Well Mike if it amuses you to know, I’m gonna party like its 1999!

    40. Two Buckets says:

does that mean my washing machine will stop working too bad will just have to use me two buckets

    41. don't tread says:

Would an EMP end life as we know it? I think it would definitely change a few lifestyles and could cause many to loose their minds and/or, their lives. The little woman would definitely miss her cell phone in one hand and the TV remote in the other, but being a true Christian, she knows those things are trivial to those seeking the kingdom of eternal life.

As I begin this year, I ponder the covenant and reassurance that life will go on until God himself determines the end; not man.
      Gen 8:22
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
I also accept the everlasting covenant that is promised and reaffirmed on a regular basis with the rainbow God has placed for us and Him to see at the same time.
      Gen 9:12
And God said, This [is] the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that [is] with you, for perpetual generations:
      Gen 9:13
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
      Eze 37:26
Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: ……
With this covenant for all those that love, honor, and, obey the Father; there is no fear of the things to come. We have the power of the Almighty and His blessings before us.
As a part of that peace covenant and dominion over “all” the creatures/animals, He gave us power with powder and the handheld weapons we sometimes refer to as the gun or “peace-maker”. It is a God given right to those that keep the law of God and man. As “we the people” set these laws thru our representatives, it is up to us to manifest our God given right to “bear these arms” and refuse to let the minority dictate our rights.

If we fail to uphold the rights given to us, first and foremost by our Creator, and documented by the contract of our US Constitution and Bill of Rights, we then have not only broken the contract for future generations, but have failed to believe in the covenant set forth by our Heavenly Father.

This year of our Lord, 2013, is a time of testing. Some may be tested to their allegiance to their faith thru natural or un-natural events of chaos and calamity, while others may be tested as to their allegiance to their American Flag and what it stands for. Each person as an individual, that has reached the age of “accountability”; will be held responsible for their actions. The dividing lines are being drawn and each accountable person has to determine which side they are going to stand with/for. There is no longer any way to dodge the issues, stand on the sidelines, or straddle the fence without facing accountability.

I believe in standing for God, with my Bible in one hand and my gun in the other. If I must die this way, then I die with honor as my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ have died before me.

Not another REPEAT article. What’s the difference between this article and the 100 other similar ones.
Michael Snyder, can’t you come up with something that hasn’t been beat to death. Don’t quit your day job.

      • Couldn’t agree more. He used to be informative but now just recycles his old articles over and over. I suspect his advertisers will catch on sometime and move to greener pastures.

    43. Raylan Givens says:

An EMP will not knock out my important devices, a lever action Marlin and a pump action Mossberg.

So I can’t nuke a frozen pizza, big flipp’n deal! My hand pump will still draw water and my wood/coal stove will still heat up the house and cook the food. (3+ years worth food, heirloom seeds, and a big garden)

Got enough jars and lids for about 5 years of canning, and enough George Dickel #12 to last 10 years. I’m good.

      • How did you prepare for Murphy?
Be careful, don’t scratch yourself or step on a nail. In the 1800′s, people died from such things… they still do.

(There is only one way to prepare for Murphy, yet we refuse to organize an underground alt.economy, so be it. Let the Remnant come.)

        • Raylan Givens says:

Much like you brother, I am a member of God’s Elect. Thus to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord.

Murphy is a ghost as everything happens for a purpose. I’m up to date with my shots, so really not worried about a rusty nail. Being right with The Lord is the best insurance a mind can have.

          God Bless.

          • Ah, so you depend on The MYSTERY… I see…
Tetanus shots do not protect you from sepsis, and unless you’re a chosen one I wish you the best.

Me? I learned what the original term ‘holy water’ was all about, and how the Catholic’s destroyed it and replaced it with their version of blessed water… don’t know that it does much in the way of curing infections, and with antibiotics being corrupted by resistant bacteria, I wish you luck brother.

Murphy visits in many ways, where ever you are weakest… and if Murphy visits your house, in any way, I pray for you and yours.

    44. Achilles Heel says:

Off-topic, but looks like the fiscal cliff has been averted! Awesome!

Before anyone starts to lampoon me with reply’s let me state, that a) I am GLAD because this merely makes the collapse of this once proud nation inevitable, unavoidable now and b) this gives me more time to prepare.

The creditors of the world that still do business with the US, namely China, will see this as a sure sign that the US has NO intention of addressing the trillions in deficits and will play a never-ending game of kick-the-can. Things MUST get much, much worse before they can get better, and hastening the collapse needs to be seen as a good thing, a needed pressing of the “Reset” button.

More time to prepare is always great as well. Always one more thing it seems! A solar-powered, high-output generator is among the final items in my checklist. I have decided, for reasons of feasibility and OPSEC that a gas-powered one might not be the best way to ensure power.

      Heel Out

      • And when the reset comes, you think the Good guys will be restored? Back ‘in charge’? The Constitution rebuilt? Gold become money? What?

SO losing it all, is the only way to Win? That by ‘Letting it burn’, we will rebuild? Do not be fooled by Ayn Rand’s depiction of evil as being stupid looters, true evil will accomplish its reset, and then invoke the ‘Lincoln option’ this is why the Dem’s aren’t worried about the debts. They will pay them off in new electronic treasury notes or the new global equivalent.

When the dollar collapses, Babylon falls ‘in one hour’ and only the merchants of the Earth will see it, and The Beast will rise, and with it, The Mark and the pale green horse will ride. And unless you are ‘in the wilderness’, you will have two choices, your head or your soul. The Little Gulches will be rolled up with your bank accounts, and you will have a Choice.

      FYI

The American Thinker site has a very good article today titled “The Socialist Mind Game: A Brief Manual” by Oleg Atbasian.

In the article is layed out the steps and lies that Communists use to slowly replace the mind set of a country with their poison.

It explains much of what is happening and will give you bad dreams, it did me.

      • KY Mom says:

Good read. These points in the article really got my attention:

“The Game can mutate and adjust to different cultures, but its basic rules always remain as follows:

Socialism is not just about taking away your money; it’s also about making you praise the takers as your saviors. You are expected to feel good about being robbed of opportunities, talents, and success. You must agree that “you didn’t build that.”

There must be a popular consensus that the crumbs you are getting back from the government are a sign of caring and largess — not a meager fraction of your actual earnings. Last but not least, you must sincerely believe that those who are trying to protect you from the thieves are really your enemies and deserve to be destroyed.

Building up and maintaining such an illusion on a massive scale requires participation of the media, education, and entertainment industries in a coordinated, long-term propaganda campaign.

Once the illusion reaches a critical mass, those afflicted by it become immune to facts, numbers, or rational arguments. Confronting them with logic will only cause more resentment, name-calling and, sometimes, violence.”

The total gun ban that’s is possibility coming in Illinois is a test, to see what kind of resistance the Federal Government can expect over all nationally.

Reportedly there are two bills; one on all semi-auto rifles, lever guns, shotguns and handguns with certain features (e.g., threaded barrels etc.) and one on mag capacity.

I know what some people will say I’d move well thousands God Fearing – Gun owners cannot. So as FREEDOM LOVING PATROITS what are we going to do to help our Brothers and Sisters in Illinois? It would be nice if 250,000+ would go peacefully to Illinois, hey go to the first radio station, newspaper office, county sheriff, state police post, etc. and physically show your support for the gun owners. I’ll guarantee word will get to the proper people on these issues.

So many so called PATROITS will sit back and do nothing (It’s not my state), will if it happens in Illinois IT DAMN SURE WILL HAPPEN IN YOURS ALSO mark my words.
Hey if you cannot go call Senate President John Cullerton Office and express to him your concerns about the gun band. Here is his number (1-217-782-2000) Illinois Government Office.

Also there will be NO GRANDFATHERING, and those not turning in your guns will be subject to confiscation by the Illinois State Police.

Do something NOW, because it is headed your way. The odds of the bill passing are 50-50. We have between Jan. 2-Jan.9, 2013 to help our fellows PATROITS!

I for one will stand with them.

    48. pale rider says:

So after the survivors cheer it up , they will all die of nasty wastin diseases , after spawning out some orc like mutants.
The orcish mutant creatures will then rule the world for a few million years . So what’s too worry about ?

The feces will stick on them this time because they are going to see the hard truth soon and then there won’t be enough water in the world to clean the pigs off.

America the beautiful is now america the sad and strangled lady who is in the last throws of death. The sheeple, the elite, the ignorant and the evil are now in charge of putting the final nail in the coffin. What a great legacy we are leaving our children, how the hell could any generation overcome this murder of a free society, most kids will not even remember what it is like to live free and work hard for a better life. When our generation is gone, so are the dreams and the dreamers.

Okay everybody had a rare earthquake on the Asian plate towards the north pole. ONLY 10 have occurred in the past 40 years and the last one here back on May 1, 2001. This area points to ONLY 4 areas and conforms what the other polar earthquakes are saying, a big earthquake is coming soon.

      Japan
      California
      Chile and Argentina Peru region
Soloman Islands to Vanuatu to Fiji.

That is it, this is beginning to pinpoint where it will hit. On Oct.3, 1989 this area had an earthquake and 15 days later the 1989 World Series earthquake occurred. That 15 days again I feel has to do with the exact opposite of where the moon is in regards to the tidal force. California is in the crosshairs along with the other areas between now and Jan. 17. Other areas that I mentioned in previous comments should occur by Jan. 8 and the 10th. If not then by Jan. 14 and 15th. There have been so many polar earthquakes that there should be at least 2 large earthquakes, maybe 3 or more by this Jan. 17 date. I would say a hair under 100% chance by jan.17 of at least a 6.5, probably over 7.

@ BI: Your informative and accurate posts made me wonder: hmmm, if a smart guy with a laptop and internet access can build his own database and connect the dots with reasonable consistency, what can a government Cray super computer (or whatever they have these days)with a virtually unlimited database and computational power beyond anything available to us accomplish? What do they know? Why have so many openly stated: “Debt is not an issue”. Why is debt not an issue?

      • Be informed says:

@ peter parker. Yeah really. Why do you think that they have been sending crews to monitor the New Madrid Fault zone, they know something is ready to go? The one issue though with even a super computer is it still has to be told what to do by people that mosly have closed minds and still cannot think outside the box. When true artificial intelligence comes out with computer brains mankind will be in big trouble. The true computer mind will explore ALL possibilities of a problem, even the ones that don’t sound possible.

By the way I have only a standard 3 year old average speed computer and a keyboard, in other words I am still practising being a dinosaur. Actually I have found that sometimes it is better to go simplistic to find the solutions to a question. Like using stickers on a globe to chart what is happening rather than trying to see some sort of 3 dimensional plain on a computer. Many times the basics work well.

    61. Actually, it wouldn’t be the late 1800′s. At least at that point we had a lot of steam engines, now adays most are in museums. It would be more like the 1600′s.

Back in the 1800′s? Interesting, but Dr. Graham seems a tad pessimistic. I live in Hungary, right in the middle of Europe. Hungary was one of the countries hit worst by WWII. The whole of the capital (Budapest) was bombed to pieces, there was no electricity throughout the country, no telecommunication, no fuel, no nothing.

The population was roughly the same (around 10 million) and people were able to survive even in the bigger cities (not those of course who had been killed by either the Germans or the Soviets).

American people sometimes go to the war. In Europe sometimes the war comes to the people.

Indeed it would be a terrible and high price to pay for a re-set, but such is the price that must be paid for cowardly self-interest that allowed this demonic [K]reature of mammon to exist and thrive over the recent centuries.
